microphone test/comparison: which outtake do you prefer?
« on: November 13, 2006, 01:49:04 PM »
uploaded 4 tracks

the link is here

test.rar - 9.55MB

direct link here (if the above does not work)

http://www.zshare.net/download/test-rar-a7f.html

the lineage of the outtakes are:

microphone>STUDER D19>LA-22>Soundscape converter>HD( with wavelabs dithering for 16bit)

I will reveal the name of the mics later  :-*

Hope you enjoy, and the tracks are part of tracking for a norwegian rock band debut album ( basically real-life studio tracks before additional processing during mixdown and mastering)

Interesting comparison Muj. +T.

For me, it's a toss up between files 1 and 2.  Both sound just a bit smoother than 3 and 4 to my ears.  In the latter two I heard some harshness on her highest notes.  Tonally though, the mics seemed quite similar to me.

Wow, apparently my ears weren't awake yet when I listened.  1 doesn't sound nearly as good as 2 does to me now, 3 sounds much better than it did to me earlier, and 4 sounds really good.  It would go 4, 2, 3, 1 for me now.  I guess the decongestant hadn't kicked yet when I first listened.

In order of  preference
4, 2, 1, 3  (all pretty damn close though)  4 my choice b/c I thought it really opened things up.  (1 and 3 virtually identical to my ears)

the microphones for track 2 and 3 are from the same microphone company and share the same capsule, only the circuitry is different and the voicing >:D

hmmm, weird.  I'll re-download again when I get home.  Some weird file extension is what I got the a.m., definitely not .wav

The file is compressed.  You need WinRAR (or Winzip) to decompress it.  That's the questionable file extension.
