SD 744T my only option for 4 channels of AES IN?
« on: November 16, 2006, 04:36:49 PM »
Hi Taperssection,

I need a portable recorder with 4 channels of AES/EBU input and so far the only thing that looks useable is the Sound Devices 744T. I'm going to use the recorder as a backup to my Nagra DII when recording in the field. Any suggestions of other recorders to check out would be very appreciated.

Thanks,

Don

I looks like the new Edirol R4-pro does AES but only has 1 input, You could also look @ the Zaxcom DEVA IV, I think the DEVA II will also do 24/48 to 4 channels.  The sonosax MiniR82 will do it if you rig up the proper cabling

EDIT: Forgot about the Fostex PD-6, it will do 6 channels via AES and a special 25pin cable.

I'm waiting for a quote on the digi-in cabling now, and trying to decide if I want AES or, for compactness, s/pdif.  I should have some XLR-to-Binder mic cables and a set of Binder-wired Sanken COS11s from them next week, and start to test how good the pre-amp is.  The machine is really small and gets HOT.

Yeah I purchased an R4-pro without reading the specs closely enough so I now have a mint condition unit to sell for below cost....

Thanks for the link to that chart. It looks like the 744T would be my best bet.
