Quadraphonic Tweeter Show
« on: November 19, 2006, 09:30:43 AM »
The Disco Biscuits have announced that their New Years Eve show at the Tweeter Center (Camden, NJ) will be produced in quadraphonic sound. I've attended four-channel concerts in the past (e.g. June 1977 Emerson Lake and Palmer at the Spectrum, Philadelphia - four speaker towers at the corners of the General Admission floor space) and am trying to determine the best way to approach taping this show.

If you aren't familiar with quad see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quadraphonic for a description.

I'm running a Roland R-4, which takes four XLR inputs.

Any suggestions on mic selection (not brand, but type) and placement?

Any suggestions for post-production .. will the source have to be run through a Dolby conversion to play correctly on a stereo rig? Should I seed two versions, like 24/96 sources are seeded at 16/44 as wel?

just thinking out loud... if you wanted to just do a two channel thing you could try healy method omnis.

edit: now that I think about it omnis inside the tweeter center may not sound that great. shitty sounding venue + omnis = crappy tape

Ideally, a double M/S set up.

double MS would be ideal. or split omnis for rears and ORTF for fronts....or another config in front.

Please seed a 5.1 DVD-A (just don't do a center channel) of this, 24/96. Please, pretty please.

How about two pairs of split omnis?

4 cardioid mics: 2 stereo pairs angled at ~ 90°, one pair facing front, the other pair facing backwards.

I don't get the reasoning for using omnis here, you want to reject the rear sound from your front facing mics, not pick it up. Likewise for your rear facing mics.

in all seriousness, all it really takes is for one person to turn his rig backwards on the stand. you'll have 2 sources, mix a quad mix, seed please. you rock Gedit. :)

I guess I am misunderstanding your confusion.  Did you think that I would have suggested leaving them in a single plane?  Would there be something wrong with putting a split pair up and another split back?  In my experience I think that this would be a cool time to experiment.

Although for a show as loud as the Biscuits...I'd just stay home...

this is probably what i would do only go with hypers, if i had the resources. i'm don't see the need for a fifth mic, but then again i've never tried anything like this. good luck to you and jonathan  :)
lookin' forward to hearing the results.
