To Run Hypers Or Not???
« on: November 19, 2006, 10:20:04 PM »
I am talking specifically about my TL's here and have not really pulled a good tape running the hyper pattern yet. I ran them twice in sitiations when I thought they would work best but I had run cards also and found I liked the cards best. Can any one share a time when they pulled a good tape w/ the hypers and how they ran/where/mic configuration/etc w/ TL's or LD mics. Below is a link to both times I ran them w/ hypers:

same place more or less w/ cards

Another venue w/ hypers

Same venue w/ cards more less same configuration

What don't you like about the recordings with hypers?  FWIW, I've found I like my 414s best coincident, rather than near-coincident or split.

It's kinda hard to explaine but I don't hear the warm full sound i get from the cards in the same room and pattern. It sounds more muffled probally because its more direct. I am jsut wondering if I should use them any more and what kind of sitiation would be ideal. So far I would go Card !!!

Hypers in general won't sound as warm and open as cards, so that's probably what you're hearing.  At least for PA audience recording, I've often felt my 414s run near-coincident produce a "muffled" result - still that lush LD sound, but lacking in focus / precision, like the soundstage is a bit blurred.  Tough to explain, you're right!  Once I started running my 414s coincident, the recordings tightened up nicely.  It's a very different sound than SDs run near-coincident, but one I've grown to enjoy.

FWIW, I use hypers when I want to minimize the surrounding environment (loud crowd, poor acoustics) and/or when I'm farther back than I'd like to get "closer" to the source.

to be honest I probably don't run hypers on my TLs as much as I should. cards/DIN is pretty much my default setup unless I'm outdoors with no roof then I like to run split omni. I typically only run hypers if I'm in a really bad sounding room and/or in a pretty bad location so it's not really fair to compare my recordings done with hypers to those done with cards.  Now that I have a second set of mics and the ability to do 4 tracks I plan on experimenting more with my TLs. I figure if I don't like the results of the experiment I'll have something to fall back on.

This may be my best TL hyper pattern source: http://www.archive.org/details/rre2006-09-19.adktl.flac16

it's not a great tape by any stretch of the imagination, but it is decent. This venue forces tapers to run from the back of the room and slightly off center. When they used to let us run from the sweet spot the tapes came out nice, but from the back they are not good. I've run cards from the same spot and been very unhappy with the results.  hypers help cut some of the boom

This is a pretty good TL hyper source done by Ron Pitman: http://www.archive.org/details/STS9-2005-02-15.ADK.flac16

That is pretty much when I tried my Hypers but I think I still prefer the cards sound better and the omni's best of all outside of course.

i listened to the songs linked above--the 2 recordings of the same band i didn't really hear much difference in myself
the other 2 the card was clearly "better" to my ears

with that said i had 391 and 93, i liked the 93 sound over the 91 sound 9 out of 10 times

so what i am saying is if you like the card sound better go with it and forget the hypers unless you are pretty sure the cards are going to pick up more thewn you would like
