Sound Devices 702 question
« on: November 20, 2006, 11:20:59 PM »
Can this recorder (the 702) record to both the CF card as well as an external hard drive or dvd burner simultaneously? I believe the 722 can write to both internal HD, CF drive and external drive at the same time right?

What is v.2.0?

2.0 is a software upgrade for all 7-Series recorders that adds the ability for recording and playing back to and from external FireWire drives. It also enables the new CL-1 Remote Control and Keyboard Interface as well as several file management additions. It is a very powerful set of features that all 7-Series recorders can take advantage of.

So....yes!  ;D

Edit:

Also should note that when running an external drive you have to use AC power or an external battery solution that can supply enough power.

BTW - what are people using as an external hard drive setup for this?

If I went external this would be the only thing I would trust. Seems more logical to me but YMMV. There are a few external harddrives people have tried to use. Some work and others don't. They recommend using certain firewire chipsets even. All of this info is on the support forum, but you must be an active owner to participate there I think.

Edit:

I will be more than happy to give you some ideas of certain external harddrives that have been known to work. Lemme gather info from that thread and I will post back.

Here is one of them....

Report on -

OWC Mercury On-The-Go FireWire Portable Kit W/ Oxford 911+ Chipset
external 2.5" hard drive enclosure FW400 and USB2

http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Other%20World%20Computing/MOTGFWU2/

with Seagate Momentus 5400.2 ST96812A - Hard drive - 60 GB - internal - 2.5" - ATA-100 - 5400 rpm - buffer: 8 MB

http://www.seagate.com/cda/products/discsales/marketing/detail/1,1081,683,00.html

When drive bus powered ie. Firewire cable only -

- Doesn't even spin up properly when powered by 744T 7.4v battery - so no luck there.

- Works perfectly when 744T externally powered. One FAT32 60Gb partition.

INHDD = 8235 KB/s
EXHDD Seagate Momentus 5400.2 = 17071 KB/s
more than twice as fast as INHDD

Had it running for a few hours only gets slightly warm.

You should also note that most of these people are running 4 tracks at 24/48 on the 744. I would guess 2 channels at 24/96 would work just fine. I bet 4 channels at 24/96 on the 744 would be fairly risky though, but I have not read many people testing it so who knows. Mostly becuase it would fill a DVD-RAM in about an hour so kinda pointless for long concert recording.

Edit:

So with the 702 at 2 channels you should be kosher. Just rambling now.

If anyone could add some other enclosures that could be battery powered and work ok with a 7xx running off battery power I'd appreciate it.

this isnt battery powered, ive already started my 7.2v 9000mah battery powering options to make sure the huge battery drain that im going to have from running the INHDD+CF Card+EXHDD can be handled without out running out of power quickly
