Help w/ Shockmounts for ADK TL's!!!!
« on: December 05, 2006, 11:44:15 PM »
Last Saturday my stand took a dive and fortuntely my shock mounts protected my TL's so nothing happen to the mics. I noticed after that the big outside ring on one of my shock mounts is all bent out of shape. I could mabey use a vise and get the shock to be okay but not perfect but really I don't like the design and don't feel safe w/ these mounts. Does any one know a better shock mount I could use? And how much and where I can buy it? Thanks in advance and I really need to secure my stand better out doors. I am thinking about using v-shaped spikes next time and securing all three legs this way.
peace

i ran the TL's for quite some time, and always used those shocks you pictured in the first post

the other ADK shocks for the TL's that come with the un-matched individuals is different than these, and maybe a bit more to your liking. it is a "clamp-style" in the middle instead of the screw in base of these.

i bet you might be able to find someone to trade you the other TL's shockmounts for these... i think these are substantially more to buy new then the others, look on adk's website maybe??

i always had good luck with this shocks from post #1, except for the times when i got ready to set up, and one of the bands had popped off and i had to try and re-string those suckers, not fun

I have been there w/ the elastic exploding right as a band is going on stage. Oh shit!!! Hasn't happen in a while. Also one of my rings (big one) got damaged last Saturday when it fell. Its pretty lopsided and not circular. Do ya think I could bend it back in place w/ a vise or mabey heat it up and bend?

I've used both the clamp style and the supermount style(the ones in your first picture)  shocks, and IMO the supermount shocks are much nicer. I seriously doubt you could find a better shock for the TLs. True, if the band pops off the supermount shock getting it back on correctly is like solving a rubix cube (it only happened to me once and thank god another taper who just happened to use Tls fixed it for me.) The clamp style band system is much easier, but if you plan on hanging the TLS upside down to do x-y, blumlein, mid-side, or whatever you'll feel much safer with teh supermount since the mic is screwed into it.

If I were you I'd just try to use a vice and bend the ring back into shape. I'd only heat it up if you have to. heating it up will reduce the integrity of the metal and will make it more likely to get bent even worse if it get's dropped it again.

If you really want to try the clamp style shocks I'd sell you my pair. I'd have to try to figure out what I'd want for them (probably not a ton of $).

Its physically impossible for a TL to fall out of the spring clamp mount. I've never understood the concern about them allowing a mic to fall out.
The screw-on end caps are larger than the body where the clamp grips. You have to open the spring clamp quite a bit to get it to pass over that end cap. Once you release the spring, you couldn't hammer a mic through the mount, not even with the bigger hammer.
I could be wrong, but I don't thin all TLs are the same moke... look at the ones in this post
http://taperssection.com/index.php?topic=65651.0

now look at the ones in this post:
http://taperssection.com/index.php?topic=66560.0

notice how the screw-on end caps in the ones in the second post are almost the same size as the body where as the ones in the first post the end caps are larger.

Are you sure those work for TLs?

It has a much simplier band design, but it looks to me like it would be just as susceptible to damage. Ny guess is that the bars that protude from the outer ring would be likely to bend if dropped. Also they look gigantic. The supermounts are big enough to try to fit in a gear bag I wouldn't want to try to figure out how to carry those things in my gear bag.

ping Larry Villella, at ADK, and find out about spare / replacement parts for the mounts?
He may have defects that he can salvage from, or, spares around. It might be worth an effort.

larry is def worth shooting an email at. he is very cool. sent me a free TL windscreen once when i inquired about a replacement

Can't help with the bent ring, sorry to hear about that.  Must have been quite a spill to bend that outer ring.   :o

The "Supermounts" style that Row Jimmy pictured consists of an outer ring which has the nut that screws onto your stand bar.  Then there is an inner cup that has the ring mount for the mic.  The inner cup floats in the outer ring on nothing but the bands, so yes, with the newer style "supermount" the mic can most definitely fall through.

So far I have been heavily taping my cables near the top of the stand so if a band breaks the cable will catch the mic.   But before my next outing I'm gonna get some nylon line and tie a safety line between the outer ring and the cup so in case a band breaks something will hold the weight of the mic other than the cable and gaffers tape.

As far as string the bands - I strongly recommend anyone running the TLs with supermounts take one of them apart and practice at home.   :-\

I'm confident that I could restring one in the field, it's not terribly difficult, but even after having done it about 10 times in a row, I can honestly say that I still could not do it

A) Without a flat surface to work on...
B) Without good light...
C) With you standing beside me saying "Hurry up man! The show is gonna start!"...
D) Dosed...
E) Any one much less all of the above...

I am geting faster at stringing my mounts each time. I string the four corners of the outer ring first, then I place the smaller ring inside at a different angle and start attaching the hooks end to end. Then I turn it over and do the same thing. Good luck!!! Also Larry from ADK looks like he is gonna set me up w/ (2) new shock mounts on warranty. What a guy!!! And I ended up puting my bent mounts in a vice and got them more or less back in shape so It looks like I might have two sets in case I have future problems.
