mics ideas for my new box
« on: December 24, 2006, 10:28:09 AM »
I just got a new Marantz 671.  I'm trying to figure out what kind of mics I want to buy.  I've been listening to recordings off of the Archieve for idea, but I can't find someone running the 671.  I'm not sure how much effect the box has, but I just wanted to compare apples to apples.

So if you are running the Marantz 671, I'd like to hear some of your recordings and know what mics you are runnin.

Even if you don't use the Marantz 671, what are your top 3-4 mic choices?

I'll mostly be recording live music of the "JamBand" flavor.
I'm willing to spend up to $1,000 on mics
I'm not interested in going stealth at all.

I thank you in advance....you guys rock.

The LSD2 sounds like a good option.  Get it new for less than $900.  Just make sure it is the new version with the different look and shock mounts.....  Then you have some money left for some silver clad cables....

Is it an Oade mod 671? FWIW, The AKG 480 > ACM 671 combo is pretty hard to top...

The LSD2 would sound nice too, and I believe it comes with a cable so you wouldn't need to buy silver clads (correct me if I'm wrong here).

How do you know that you're buying a "new" style LSD2 anyways?

Robbie Dunn runs this, and his Xmas Jam recordings sound damn good.  Might be a bit over your budget?

Okay.  3 questions here.
Why is he running 2 different models of Schoeps mics?
What is the KC5?
Why use a pre-amp?

mk4 are the caps (cardoids), kc5's are the active cables, cmc6 are the mic bodies, v3 is a pre/ad.  The mk4>kc5>cmc6 is a lowpro setup typical for fob recording.  This way, only your caps are run on the stand while the bodies remain in the bag.  Makes for an fairly unnoticable setup.  Running the v3 would just give you a different flavor than running 671 alone.  The v3 pre is most likely a bit better than the stock 671 pre.  The a/d converter on the v3 is also probably a bit better than the stock 671 a/d.

Basically if you have an Oade Mod ACM 671, it sounds nearly identical to a v3.  I am very happy with how mine sounds with my AKG c34 (stereo mic with AKG ck1 capsules).  So any combination of mics you find with the mics > v3 combo will be very representative of you're final result going mics > 671.   I highly recommend trying to find a pair of AKG 460's with the ck1 capsule, run XY it sounds  :headphones:   The studio projects lsd2 is a great mic however its quite large so be prepared with a heavy duty stand.   Any AKG mic should sound nice as do MG mics but that is a bit outside your budget.

Sanjay, I would think that 460's even with the ck1 capsule run in XY would sound weird, your c34 has LD's and the capsules are bigger and i think thats why they ened to be run coincident, right? i have always hated the soundtsgae/image of SD's in XY, LD's, are a diff story tho
