Topic: VxPocket

Anyone used one of these? I am thinking of going for 24/96 and using my picturebook  Enough 'bothering' the rockbox people, I'll do it myself, thank ya very much.  I found one for 185 + shipping, thinking about giving it a go.

I've used a vxpocket with my vaio picbook for over 5 years and I agree, rock solid.
I used soundforge 6 or 7 because of the better battery times and lighter resource usage.

I say go for it, but watch out for that breakout cable coming unplugged, it's prone to do that, and it will kill your input and sometimes cause the need for a total reboot of the vaio to recognize it again.

Gaffers tape probably works the best, not the prettiest solution, but it does work.
Supposedly there is a guy that makes locking digital only breakout cables for the vxpoxket, but I have no idea where that guy is now.

What if I just want to record from the s/pdif input, can I take off that breakaway Xlr and such mishap?

you could cut off the other cables on the breakout cables. i used mine with the stock dongle for a few shows and didnt really have any problems

you can also get a custom dongle that i believe ian stone used to make, with just s/pdif input and headphone jack. i got one of these right after i got my vx pocket and it was a huge step up from the stock dongle

Right, Ian Stone, that was the guy. Where is he now and does he still make those?

I tried forever to get him to make me one, and he didn't ever one ready.

Does it actually lock? Cutting off the other cables will work for reducing the weight and strain on the breakout cables, but it won't affect whether it stays attached to the vx card or not. Gaffers tape, trust me. Then run the vaio on it's side with the dongle pointed up, such as in one of the m-audio gear bags.

I hardly use my vaio anymore, the part where you attach the ac cable is all messed up and really hard to plug into ac power now. It needs to be rebuilt as some of the pins are bent and plastic casing around the inside has shredded a bit with all the frequent plugging.

I just got an R4, so I imagine the Vaio, in use faithfully since may 2001, will be retired from field use.
I must say, the vaio still works well all these years later, no problems at all. Just a yearly rebuild and format.
Anyone know where to possibly get the ac plug rebuilt? I have no idea even where to look

Anybody know what is actually happening when I play 24/96 files through my VxPocket 440? Is it down sampling to 24/48?

Good question, I don't know if it downsamples. It probably just does something similar to bit-truncating from 24 bit to 16 bit without dithering. It probably resamples it without any sort of algorythm masking the noise from the downsample.
