Replacing HD in the R-4. Need some help.

Hey yall,
Decided to replace the r-4's HD to a 100gb last night.  Same specs as the Hitachi 40gb HD that came with the unit.  Got the machine apart just fine and put in the new HD.  Did the format drive and scan drive function from the R-4 and everything seemed to go OK.  (no errors noted from r-4).

This morning I went to tape some bird sounds and R-4 will not record.... (re formatted drive etc....still does not want to record..... did the reset to factory and still nothing).

Any ideas on what to do besides put back the other HD?  Have yall put in new HD's on your r4's?

Any help appreciated.

The R4 has trouble formatting drives over 60GB so you must use Windows and a outboard program if you are in NTFS with windows. The drive must be formatted Fat32.

are you saying it just has trouble formatting the disk initially when no FAT table is present, or will it never be able to format a >60gb disk?

Thank you Busman.  I tried like hell to get the 100gb formatted but had no success.

Couldn't even get teh R-4 to show up as an external drive (windows XP)

Once it is formatted to Fat32 should it work perfectly?  ie.  Could I take it to a computer shop and have them format drive then just drop drive into R-4?  Does new drive HAVE to be formatted via widows while inside the R-4?

Thanks Chris.  I think I pointed to the same program (in post above).  Yeah, any time you want to format FAT32 bigger than 30G you need this program.  For some wacky reason Windows prevents FAT32 bigger than 30G.  Trying to sell NTFS I guess.

You should put the drive in the R-4 then format it while it is connected to your PC via the usb. It is easy and worth the extra couple of minutes to have that much space for recording.

This is a task anyone can do. Just follow the instructions on the website above and you will have no trouble.
