update:
I will get a replacment for the Sandisk to try out. In the meantime M-audio offered the following info to create a rescue disc. Hope this can help others too:
Here are some detailed instructions on creating and using a 1.4.0
rescue
disk.
1) Copy the 1.4.0 update files to a FAT 32Ý formatted Compact Flash
card or
MicroDrive.
2) Turn off the MicroTrack (if not already done) and insert the card
(if not
already done).
3) Hold down the menu button. While continuing to hold the menu
button,
press and release the Power button to turn the MicroTrack on (you will
have
to hold the power button for about a second for the press to be
recognized).
4) Look for the MicroTrack to display the M-Audio boot screen and the
words
"Booting Rescue Disk" below the M-Audio logo. When you see this you
can
release the menu button.
5) When using 1.4.0 as your Rescue Disk firmware, the next screen you
should
see is the Firmware update screen. Press the Nav key to update the
MicroTrack's firmware to 1.4.0.
When the update is finished it will automatically reboot using the
MicroTrack's firmware (instead of the copy of the firmware on the
Rescue
Disk). The version screen should now indicate that the firmware is now
1.4.0.
Ý To be used as a "Rescue Disk", the media MUST be formatted FAT32. If
the
media is formatted FAT16, when the MicroTrack tries to boot into Rescue
Disk
mode, the MicroTrack will display an error message that reads "HDD Init
Failed. Connect to PC." To format media that is smaller than 1GB in
size,
you will need to use a PC (or Mac) to format it FAT32. If you try to
use
the MicroTrack to format media smaller than 1GB using the System ->
Format
Media menu, it will instead format the media FAT16 (which is optimal
when
recording to the media but won't allow use as a "Rescue Disk").
Troubleshooting Rescue Disk Mode
Problem: I get a message saying HDD Init failed. Solution: Format the
media
FAT32. Also try another piece of media as your Rescue Disk just in case
your
media is defective.
Problem: I never see the "Booting Rescue Disk Mode" message and the
MicroTrack never shows the firmware update screen? Solution: Make sure
you
have the MicroTrack turned off an not plugged in to power before
pressing
the Menu button and following step 3.
Problem: I see the screen briefly flash the screen with the M-Audio
logo and
it reads Booting firmware or Booting Rescue Disk below it but then it
turns
back off. Solution: Make sure to release the Power Button after
pressing it.
If you hold it down too long the MicroTrack will power back off. Try
releasing the power button as soon as the backlight comes on.
Problem: Instead of saying Booting Rescue Disk, my MicroTrack reads
Insert
Rescue Disk! after step 3. Solution: The firmware files are either
corrupted
or have not been copied to the Media correctly. Copy the 3 firmware
update
files to the root (top level) of the media. Make sure that they are not
inside of any folders.
Problem: When I try and turn on the MicroTrack (step 3) the screen
doesn't
display anything. Solution: The battery may be fully discharged. Plug
in
your MicroTrack to the battery charger/power supply for at least 30
minutes
to give it an initial charge.
Problem: I've followed all of these procedures but my MicroTrack still
won't
start up on it's own. Solution: Unfortunately if updating the firmware
using
Rescue Disk mode did not correct the startup problem with your
MicroTrack,
it may require service. Contact your local M-Audio support centre for
additional instructions.
