AKG 414 windscreen question.
« on: February 14, 2007, 11:42:27 AM »
I'm pretty sure from what I see in pics the new 414's have a soft windscreen with no plastic frame around the bottom.  Mine do and they won't fit on the mics with my new Wondermounts.  Can I buy those windscreens separately?  Or does anyone wanna trade or have any extras?  Or maybe a substitute that will work with the 414's?  Thanks for reading.  Mark

Relative to the cost of the rest of our recording gear...a pittance.  Well worth it after they save the day in outdoor, windy recording scenarios.

For less cash, some people use and like the "dead rat" option.  I think someone in the YS was offering to make them for people at one point.  I suspect the dead rats will cut the HF a bit more than a traditional foam w/s, but can't confirm as I've not used both.  Besides, many people like them just fine.

Oh I wasn't saying I wouldn't pay 73 bucks.  But if I'm gonna spend that much I want a better windscreen than that.  Looking at the Neumann's right now.  Or thinking of modding mine.

yep.....Teddy picked me up 1 WS in Germany after I lost one at the Black Crowes show.  It was still $40.00.

So above the  WS 89s and WS 87 are mentioned.  They both will work?  What's the best place to buy these?

Ahhhh...my mistake, I didn't realize the $73 link was for the stock pop-screen "windscreens".  Still, maybe worth it as some measure (not sure how effective) of protection from smoke / particulates.

The WS89 definitely work - I use 'em on my XLSBest I found was ~$70/pr.

If your willing to spend 73 dollars on some windscreens, which are just a thin foam, Ill sell you mine for 72 dollars!!!
Thats freakin crazy. Yes I know they are $1400 mics (I have a pair),and we all want to protect our investment but 73 bucks? Cmon....... ???

Hopefully they come with some lube for your ass after the charge sale goes through... ;D

That looks great.  Now another question.  Are the new 414's the same size as my TL's?  Mine seem shorter but maybe I'm wrong.  Mine are 5 3/4" tall including the stem {4 1/4 just body}.  1.75" wide.  1.5" deep.

414-XLS size, from the user manual, and confirmed physically on my mics measuring the widest points on the mic:

2" x 1.5" x 6.3" (50 x 38 x 160 mm)

The 6.3" length includes the stem.  Just the body, no stem = 4.5" length.  Measured circumference is 6.25".
