« on: March 03, 2007, 03:50:18 PM »
On this in Rockbox, what setting do you folks recommend?

"Split Time:
Set the time to record between each split, if time is used as Split Measure.
Options (hours:minutes between splits): Off, 00:05, 00:10, 00:15, 00:30, 1:00, 1:14 (74 minute CD), 1:20 (80 minute CD), 2:00, 4:00, 8:00, 10:00, 12:00, 18:00, 24:00."
Open:  Busman Audio BSC1-K1/K2/K3/K4 > Kind Kables Chameleon > Marantz PMD-661 (Oade Concert Mod)

No Stand:  AT831s > CA Bat 2B Battery Box > Tascam DR-07

You can do it manually with Rockbox. Every time you hit the record button (once you have started recording) the recording ends and the file is saved and it keeps recording starting a new file without any loss.
I'd not use an automatic split time, it can happen what beefstew says.

Why would you split a recording??
I always use Splite time 'Off' and split the entire WAV-file in post by using Cool Edit Pro...

Right.  I don't split by time but by file size (1.75GB).

I do it in post aswell (with CD Wave; I used to do it with Soundforge but sometimes little clicks appeared), but maybe some people like to do it while recording...

Only reason you might want an auto split would be to avoid the 2GB issue. Even running 16/44 if a set hit the three hour mark you could have some issues in post if your software of choice doesn't handle files >2GB.

Right now nothing...in the past: Schoeps CMC6, AKG 480, AKG 460, AKG 414, MBHO 603a, Neumann KM100, ADK TL>Schoeps MK4, Schoeps MK2, Schoeps MK41, AKG ck61, AKG ck62, AKG ck63, Neumann AK40, Neumann AK50, MBHO ka200>Lunatec V2, Lunatec V3, Apogee Mini-Me, Oade M148, Oade M248, Sound Devices MP2, Sonosax SXM2>Sony (mod)SBM1, Apogee AD500>D7, D8, D100, M1, R1, R4, R09, iRiver HP120, Microtrack

Exactly, which is why if I am really worried about going over, I usually set the split to just shy of 2 gigs. That said, I think the H120 handles that by itself doesn't it? The reason why I don't usually do that is (at least in my build) if the file split is set by file size, then the display during recording shows the file size getting bigger on the screen BUT NOT the time incrementing, which annoys me for some reason as it's reassuring to see the timer increasing to know you are still recording (once the file size gets big, it doesn't increment that much, so it's just a tiny bit spooky like that). However, I guess the workaround for that is to set it by time using a time limit just shy of the known 2-gig mark.

Yep, as mentioned in the iRiver FAQ (click here):
Quote
* 2GB file size limit (3 hour 23 minute 44.1kHz WAV)
* seamless file-split after 2GB (so you don't miss a moment of the gig)

I did 2 recordings that used more than 2Gb and ended up with 2 WAV-files that could be merged seamless in post.

So, no absolute need for file split during recording (unless wanted for specal purposes).
