ISO Schoeps Mini-TBar for MBHO's
« on: March 08, 2007, 06:03:23 PM »
I'm looking for something that will hold just the capsules of my new MBHOs...like this really nifty little device that bluegrass_brad included in a post that he sent me...see the first picture.

I found the item in the second picture on the website of kindcables, but it's $110 and the clips look like they're plastic.  For $110, I'm not sure I want to buy something that's got plastic in it...even if I have to pay more for something like brad has in the first pic.

1)  Does anybody have any experience with the kindcables product?

2)  Does anybody know where I can get a similar product that's all metal.

You can make the same thing using your stock 603(A) clips.  Just replace the spanner bar with a 5/8" model instead of the 3/8" one shown in the pic.  Edit to add:  Or if you don't mind a sloppier hack job, you can just tape the clips to a length of dowel rod for the same effect.

Thanks Brian.  Since I bought the HO's used, I guess I didn't get the clips you're talking about...or at least not that look like those in the pic that have a nice lock screw to enable the clips to lock the capsules nice and tight.  The clips I received are double duty, with the small clips on one end and the bigger clips to hold the tubes on the other.  I suppose those would work though with a bar like you suggest, but I was hoping to find something pretty much like Brians doo-hickey in the picture if it's out there somewhere.  The plastic one that I reference is still a possibility, but damn $110 seems steep for something that looks like it could break so easily.

The only downside to the Kwonbars is the inability to adjust included angles and/or spacing as circumstances dictate.  That said, I used Kwonbars with my Schoeps for a long time and loved 'em.  But I now enjoy the flexibility of the Vark bar for modifying spacing and included angle.

Yeah, I love your kwon bars too, now that I have them ;D.  The trade off with the vark bar is that extra time you save and hassle of setting the spacing and angles up using the kwon bars.

After seeing Chris Church's reply to my MBHO and A53M thread, it got me thinking about shadowing/relfecting effects with the kwon bars, does anyone think it is an issue?  The varks seem to have a lower profile in terms of showdowing/reflecting.

I'm new to this and have no experience whatsoever with actual results, but I see from cascade.com that the kwon bars are round and I seem to recall the rig picture Chris was referring to where he mentioned reflection...it seems that in the pic there was some kind of solid disc mounted behind the mics.

Anyhow, it seems that the round Kwon bars would diffuse sound away from the mics enough that there would be no reflection issues.  If the bars were square or flat in the front, maybe there would be more of a concern.  However, if worried enough about it, I suppose you could wrap some sponge, elastic, velcro, tape, or some such material around the bars to make them sound absorbant instead of sound reflective.

Thanks to everyone for the earlier responses to this post.
