My First M/S Recording - Feedback?
« on: March 11, 2007, 09:34:24 AM »
I borrowed JAson's LSD2 and ingsy's 660 last weekend and ran midside at the Paradise for Lotus.  (~9 feet high and 6 feet from the stage).   Spent some time playing around with the Waves S1 Plugin to mix it.  I'd be interested what people think - and if I can do any more to improve it.  Nematode is a good track.

The 660's level knobs take some getting used to.  Please skip Comptroller as I spent the first half of that song trying to figure out what I was doing.   ::)

Thanks.  The LSD2 might be my next mic purchase.

Did a quick listen on Traval and Greet.....like it alot.  My 4051s didn't capture  Jesse's bass like that LSD2.  Nice job.

Thanks, I'd be interested in hearing your recording Greg.  Are you planning on sharing it?  If not, can I send some blanks and postage?  Shoot me a PM.

sounds good brad. It has a nice stereo image, and it sounds like you captured everything. There was a really interesting discussion recently concerning M/S recording. one post in particular was very informative with regards to mixing...

I recently purchased a used LSD2 and my first 2 outings with it have been x/y cards, which worked really nice but I was wondering how I configure the caps for different techniques like m/s, and what pattern you are supposed to use in different situations, for example, fob, outside configs, etc. Sorry to hijack this post the recording sounds awsome! Thanks for any and all help!

I was wondering how I configure the caps for different techniques like m/s

M/S (aka midside) is basically point one capsule directly forward at the center of the sound source (in my recording I used cardioid, although you can change this depending on the location and sound) this is the "Mid" source:

... and the second capsule configured in a figure-8 pattern coordinated so it point's perpendicular to the other cap - basically pointing left/right, parallel to the front of the stage - this is the "Side" source.

<===>

Once you transfer your recording to your computer, you decode and combine the 2 sources together to create an optimal mix according to what you like to hear.

Hope that helps.  Lots more detail following Shawn's reference to another thread.

Of course, I'll share it.  Once I get it tracked (it's in a long line of stuff to track) it will probably end up on Archive.  If not, I'll PM you for you addy.  Jason put his up?  I'd like to hear the Gefells.

edit for spelling.

Nice!  I sent Jason the split times so he can track his out really quickly (they are in my info file), so hopefully we'll see his up soon.  I bet his recording is fantastic.  Gefells... mmmm....

Sounds like a really great mix Brad..I'm really liking the occasional 'WOO!!' from the crowd, adds a LOT to the atmosphere! ;D

OT kinda: for the 'side' mic, how do you position it so it points both left & right at the same time? Seems impossible to me, but then again it's 3am here, haha.. :P

EDIT: Just got my answer (it appears) from this pic :)

Thanks Brennan, glad you enjoyed it!  Sounds like you were on the right track.  One of the 2 capsules is configured in a figure 8 pattern like this:

The other one is configured as a cardioid, like this:

I was wondering if you'd be willing to upload a non-matrixed sample of this? I mean a 1-2 min. sample that is still M and S and not L and R. I ask because I'd like to play with mixing a MS myself sometime as I don't have much experience with it.
