Iriver HP120 HDD Bad sectors?
« on: March 25, 2007, 08:54:10 AM »
Hi,

I noticed a few issues in my Iriver last time when transferring into my PC.
The transfer was stucked and then, after a minutes, it was cancelled with a "redundary error", so that means there is a bad sector in the HDD.

Then I ran a error test and a recovery test for the HDD. Then problem solved. I transfered the file to my computer and when I was listening to the master file I found a "gap" in the song. Finally I came to realice that the "bad sector" recovery test made this gap in the song.

So, is there any tool to test my HDD and then fix it if there's any problem with it?

The best way to test a hard drive is to do a regular format on it. If there are bad sectors found or if the format seems to take forever IE more then 1 hour get rid of the drive and get a new one. The thing about bad sectors is this once you find one others will follow and they will end up costing you a show. There are plenty of drives on ebay for that recorder they are priced around $100 to $150 get a new one with some kind of warranty imo.

Thanks Chris,

I've done a format and now I'm gonna do a defrag.

Then I'll record a "dumb" file (I mean, I'm gonna let the Iriver record the ambient of my room for a couple of hours) and then I'll try to send the files to my computer to see what happens

Regards,

Honestly if your drive has bad sectors replace it. I would never use that drive for recording anything important.

Don't really know if it's worth to replace it or buying a brand new iriver... I've done the format (it takes 10 minutes long, normal) so there are no bad sectors on the HDD, may have been a located error because of fragmentation of the HDD.

I'm doing a 8 hour long recording right now and I'll try to see if the same thing happens again.
