cdwav and 24 bit file types and Audition..
« on: April 09, 2007, 09:01:23 PM »
I have some 24 bit / 88.2 kHz files of some old tapes I'm converting, and when I try to use cdwav for splitting them I get:
"Error parsing commandline: Bad format - only PCM format supported".
I have recorded with Audition and saved with the default file format. In View > Wave Properties I see the file format is "Windows PCM, IEEE float (0.24 float type 3)" so I'm a bit puzzled.
I researched file types and ts.com but could not find what I'm doing wrong.
I experienced with other file types and I can open a 24 bit / 96 kHz "Windows PCM, 24-bit Packed Int (type 1 (24-bit))" that I can create with the options of the file type while saving with Audition, but there's that "Enable dithering" check that is disturbing me a bit.
So, I have to use type 1 packed 24-bit file types for use with cdwav ? And I have or not to "enable dithering" when saving as type 1 file with Audition from my 24/88.2 file ?
Thanks.

Audition doesn't record natively to 24-bit.  Instead, it records in 32bfp and pads the least significant 8-bits with zeroes.  Without knowing more about your recording chain and software configurations, I bet your "Windows PCM, IEEE float..." files are 32bfp files with 24/88 audio content and padded with 8-bits of zeroes.  So...in order to get them into 24-bit format so CD-Wave will recognize them:

  • Open in Audition
  • Save As and in Options select 24-bit (Type 1 packed int)  (or something like that, forget the exact words)
  • UNtick the "Enable dithering" checkbox (Audition will simply truncate the 8-bits of padded zeroes)
  • Specify the path/filename and save

You should now have 24/88 files CD-Wave will recognize.

Thanks, I suspected something like that. Since I record 24 bit from my M-Audio Firewire 410 I thought the lsb were zeros, but since I'm just starting with higher bitrates and depths I was really abit puzzled.
Thanks, now I'll try to understand how to give you a +T!
