Topic: good price for used 660?

whats a good price for a used, stock PMD660? with a 4gig CF card?

I saw one go for $360 on ebay last week but....

MSRP is $650, most online vendors offer it for $500 new,
a few sell  new for $425 - $450.  So I'd look for a price
around $350 for a used unit, including the original box and
AC power supply.  Sometimes the seller will sweeten the
deal by including Compactflash, but these are amazingly
cheap now so I wouldn't add a lot for a used CF card.

I had one stock for awhile and was really disappointed with it.  I would never own another one without the oade mod.

Def. needs to be modded. Not sure how many mods Oade does if you buy the unit somewhere else. I remember something about the basic concert mod but not sure about the advanced concert mod.

is this just because of the overload or b/c of noisy preamps or both? i like how the BASIC (not basic concert) mod sounds. i really couldnt hear much (for the money) difference between them and teh ACM. do you think the BASIC mod will overload in (some) loud concerts? what about the 20db pad? ive got a pad on my c4s too...

what are the disadvantages of using the pad, if any? plus i also *really* like recording nature sounds etc and doing matrixes (im gonna get a 4 channel mini mixer). my gut feeling tells me that it will be cool.

do the basic concert mod or the advanced cm.  The inputs brickwall.  I used it as a backup to the live mix from my multitrack rig and there were times, even though the meters were in a respectable area, that it was totally brickwalling from the input.  Even with a pad it was a problem with mics.  I used studio project c-1's with the pad and the pmd660 pad, in a small bar, and brickwalled 1/2 the time.  Take my advice and get a concert mod from oade or you will be disappointed.  Only other thing that would work would be an external mic attenuator, but thoes are not cheap for good ones and you may as well spend the money for the mod.  Luckily I bought mine from oade and I was able to sell it here to someone who got the mod done.  My original intent was to do the acm on it when I got more money, but then I had $$$ problems and just sold it.

I always use the -20 pd setting on the pmd660. If you listened to the David Gilmour Radio City recording (I listened to Echoes and Fat OldSun), the recording was decent (a very loud show and I was close to the stage) and it handled it (the bass was extrememly heavy) but I recorded  two shows at a small venue (CBGB's). The Trews recording was pretty good but Rose Hill Drive was fucking loud and the recording was major brickwall.

The unmodded pmd600 is decent recorder but modification or a pre-amp in front IMO is a must if you want great recordings!
