Bogen Superclamp Uses/Which Accessories?
« on: April 12, 2007, 09:55:55 PM »
I've been looking to add a clamp or two to my bag, so in another recent thread where someone asked about clamps, many people responded about their love of the Bogen Superclamp.  So, on the strength of those recommendations, I snagged one last weekend when it came available on the yard sale.  No accessories came with the clamp...no standard stud.

Now that I have it, I can see that it's a great clamp, but without any stud or accessories, I'm having difficulty visualizing the different uses/applications.

So, my questions are:

1) How do I make best use of this clamp?

2) It looks to me like I can't make much use of the clamp without additional accessories, so which are the best add-ons to get (maybe a second clamp and the appropriate stud so I can hook up a pair together, for example?)

3) You people that recommended this Superclamp so highly in the other thread...how're you using it?

Thanks for any help!!!

Steve

I find that I get the most use out of my Bogen quick release C clamp, more than any other, and I have two superclamps and connectors as well.  The C clamp, along with the Bogen quick release 5/8" adapter, allow me to clamp to just about anything, and then go either vertical or horizontal, depending on the clamping surface.  I rarely need to use my superclamps, which only occasionally get used to clamp my stand to something else.  I have the 5" extension arm, which attaches to the C clamp as well, giving you even more options when you need them.

I saw a Quick Release C-clamp (QRC) in person for the first time the other night.  -Very- nice clamp.  But I've found the SuperClamp's somewhat flexible and configurable (one may leave in or remove the wedge) jaw provides more flexibility than the traditional screw / plate jaw (like the QRC).  This allows me to clamp at odd angles and to odd shaped mounts more easily than a standard screw / plate jaw.  $0.02

Brian, With the QRC, which has a built in 5" extension, and the Bogen mini extension arm, and the quick release mount, as long as there is something to clamp to, you can get your mics to whatever angle you want, by adjusting the angles of the extension arm and mount.  It has a wider opening than the superclamp, fitting around rails that the superclamp can't.   As I said, I carry both, two superclamps actually, but I usually use the QRC.

so i am looking for a clamp, i don't want to get a superclamp, right now anyway
i know the windtech c clamp lots of people use
but i am wondering about this one as well...
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=Search&A=details&Q=&sku=298906&is=REG&addedTroughType=search
the one plus to the c clamp is you can hook to a vertical or horizonal pole
does anyone have any other "plus"?

i would be using it to hold akg480s on a akg tbar and windtech shocks
thanks

The only problem I've noticed with the clamp you linked to is the opening is rather small and won't mount to some heavy-duty light stands. Balcony railings are out of the question. To a mic stand it should be ok.

Get the WindTech clamp everyone talks about.  It is a MUST in any Respectable Tapers bag...

I have this clamp and a Bogen SC w/ 5" extension.  The Bogen is a hoss and would hold my TLs in a hurricane...  But for normal purposes, the WindTech is just fine for the TLs.  In fact, I had 2 so I could XY, etc...  But I sold one...

Anyways, for your 480s, the WT clamp is perfect.

But to elaborate on the SC, with the Extension Arm, the SC only goes Vert (like on a pole or stand, but not a horiz handrail).  To go Horiz with the SC, you have to remove the Stud from the Arm and screw into the clamp itself.  At least that's how mine works...

Yeah, I figured all that, I do the same with my SC.  The couple scenarios I'm thinking about, though, require me to get a very specific angle, directly off the base of the clamp, for my custom 2' > 6.5' extension pole - it's not just about mic positioning on a couple extensions / right-angle extensions.  And in this one regard, the different style jaws of the SC do the trick for me while a traditional jaw like the QRC doesn't quite (I've tried with a similar clamp).  A bit difficult for me to exlplain without pics.   :-\

I think, though, if I top the QRC with my new-ish posi-lok joint (which I didn't have the first time I tried with a similar clamp), it would achieve the same function.  Hmmm...might have to give one a try...the broader clamp mouth would occasionally come in handy.  Thanks for all the discussion around the QRC - and to Thingol for breaking his out last weekend - I think I'm sold.  (Can never have too many clamps!)

I know what you are saying about the extension pole and the two superclamps.  I remember a thread a while back where you discussed having the pole made.  Please remind me where, or link to the thread, as I am interested in getting one, or something similar to also work with the SCs.  Thanks.
