Topic: I have recording (my first one!), what to do now?

Right, so I've recorded Wolf Eyes tonight (on MD). My first recording ever. Pretty excited about the result. I've found a good spot I think (somewhere in the middle, middle). My recorder went nuts for a minute in the beginning (don't know why) so it's like a minute of funny sound and then audience talks here and there, but it's not very distracting (is it possible record and avoid audience talk...i don't think so). But the sound of recording is very good I think.

But my main reason why I'm writing is that what to do once you have your recording on the MD, how to adjust the recording (can you?) and convert it to .flac. What software do I need to do that. Should I import it through Sonic Stage first (is that actually possible)?

I was always wondering what that means (i have an idea, but still...):
 
for example : JB3 > USB > Cooledit > CDWave > FLAC

I would assume you have one large .wav file?

First thing is - do you want to work on the recording? (i.e. increase bass, increase volume, ect...) Programs like Adobe Acrobat and Sound Forge are used to touch up the recording!

Second thing is (if you have one large .wav file), is to split the tracks using cdwave!

Once the tracks are split, convert the .wav files to flac to save space on on your HD and/or transfer the file t cd-r for archives or trade purposes.

and how do you import that track from my MD to my HD (by the way, is the track on MD a .wav file)?

I knew, there's going to be some problem (it wouldn't be normal then, hehe). So I wanted to transfer track from my MD to my hard disk using Sonic Stage ( software, which goes with my MD), but I got error message:

Unable to transfer the following tracks to My Library because they are recorded
by Net MD or another computer.

well, you'll need some way to transfer, and theres no way to directly do it with that model only the hi md's can you transfer via usb, you'll need a md deck(component) then have to use at least rca's to miniplug into the computer and have to transfer it in real time. If I am off correct me but i had that model for a while and i am going from memory.

go line out from your MD deck
then line in on your comp,
and record it into a wav file there

The Hi-MD recorders can upload via USB.  The MZ-RH1 is most complete in this and can upload legacy MD from other recorders, like your MZ-N707.  If you do not use this option, going through Audacity as explained in a previous post is what you will have to do. 

I run my WAV file through CDWave Editor to mark of the individual tracks, then I use the FLAC frontend to convert the WAV files to FLACs and then apply ReplayGain with foobar2000 (free) to use up all the unused headroom, i.e., get it as loud as possible wihout clipping.  If I apply compression I do it iwith Audacity (free) before applying ReplayGain.  Write with any more questions you may have.  You might also want to cruise by http://forums.minidisc.org to get some more specific help on MD's.  I love my little RH1.  It is cheap and does the job quite well but they are not well regarded here.   Keep on recording and you will get better.  We all start at the same place.

So I need to buy a cable with two small jacks on each side. Plug it into my md (which line do you mean, the one for a headphones or line in {optical}, coz you're saying line out?), plug it into my pc and use audacity?

Thanks for info. I don't really understand few terms in connection to to "after recording production" you're mentioning like what's leagacy, clipping, compression unused headroom i.e. but I guess I'll find out. Cheers for the link, I'll check that out. So the easiest way would be to have RH1 and import it straight away through cable as I thought that's the way how you do it in every case. I'm just wondering what's the story with SHARP MD. Audacity?

Yep with that model of md you have there is no way to transfer to the computer, you will need a rh1 or a home deck(component). I found that out the same way you just did, i just bought a hi-md rh910, although it will play all md's it can't transfer non hi-md's only the rh1 can do it all.

First check your computer and make sure it has RCA in's. Mine only has an 1/8th in input. The RCA>mini wont work if you dont have rca inputs. I used to go headphone out (1/8th)>computer via 1/8th in on the computer side.

Just look at the line in on your computer to determine what cable you need for the transfer.

After that just play the MD into your computer with one of hte above mentioned softwares and your all set.

so I've try it (throught audacity) and it seem's to work.

now I have to find out more about the software, coz I'm pretty lost to work with it.

what is: set sample format? mine is Mono, 44100Hz, 16-bit and there's an option for 24-bit and 32-bit float. I'm pretty lost in this Hz thing. I don't know what's that mean.
