So the DPA 4060s arrived yesterday...
« on: April 26, 2007, 11:36:37 AM »
... along with the power supply.

The PS did not come with a cable (geez, at that price you'd think they'd include it!)

Do I just get a double-ended 1/8" mini at RS or am I confused?  I want to use them to record a rehearsal tonight (swoon - I'm slavering with anticipation!).   Thanks!

Edited to add: even though I've seen them IRL before, I STILL can't get over how small they are.  HOw does something THAT tiny produce that sound!??? (no, no - that IS a rhetorical question - I know there are technical reasons, I'm just being... well... an awed junior gearslut..... :))

Yep. Make sure you get a straight male plug. The right angle kind won't fit my MMA6000.

I got the kind with the plastic plug (vs. the gold metal kind) because the metal kind doesn't work well with my JB3.

THANKS!!

Next question - are they more or less sensitive than the internal mics on the Edirol?  I won't be able to openly set levels since it's an orchestra rehearsal so am trying to come up with a "best guess" for this first time out... :)

TIA. :)

I can only comment on my rig (see signature), but I had to turn up both the R-09 and my preamp to get an acceptable volume. In hindsight, I should have turned up both even more.

Some right angle plugs will fit, others won't.  If you can find one that does, it's better so you don't have the plug & cord sticking out the back of the preamp.  I think Guysonic / Sonic Studios right angle cables will fit.  I know the cheap HeadRoom 12" cable they sell for use with their batt powered headphone amps fits nicely since that's what I use. It either has to be small enough to fit in there (like the two options above) or long enough between the TRS part and the right angle to clear the back of the preamp.

Oh me oh my...

:D

I gussed  the levels COMPLETELY wrong (not least because they changed venue on us and instead of being in the theater we were in a too-small-for-full-orchestra rehearsal room and placed BEHIND the orchestra).

However, even with the levels way too hot, I am gobsmacked. Breathtaking.  Even in places where it clipped because the level was badly over, you can STILL hear "real sounds" through the clipping (usually caused by the timps - may need to consider rolling off in post on some recordings, I see).

Anyway, I've heard enough recordings with them over the months that I knew I'd like them.  I didn't know I would like them THIS much.

Thanks to all for your suggestions so I was up and rolling by tonight. I am beyond happy with them so far!  Monday and Tuesday will be the acid test (in the theater w/orchestra) but I have no doubt they will continue to take my breath away....

Ha!  Thanks for the reminder.  Done. :)

Oh, and btw, also meant to say that they seem to run hotter than the Edirol internal mics (just in case anybody else ever asks)
