Mounting Schoeps XY
« on: May 15, 2007, 04:46:57 PM »
Hey,

Has anyone devised an alternative method to mounting Schoeps capsules in an XY pattern other than a Vark bar/clips.

Some recording I do is off centered and XY to a stack simply will sound better than a crooked DIN.

Thanks.

hey now,

I use both the vark bar with schoeps sgcm clips and the schoeps m100c stereo bar. Both are capable of ortf and xy.I preffer using the vark bar because I can get PERFECT ortf with my MK4V's,but not with the m100c.The M100c has plasic clips that dont adjust/swivel like the schoeps sgcm metal clips. The varkbar is much lighter than the m100c but still just as strong.
Overall the vark and clips are expensive, but well worth the money.

Heres a link to the M100c.Dont see many tapers using it.

You might not be interested in a totally homebrew method, but refer to my PVC Kwon Bar post.  I really haven't given much thought to XY, but I don't think it would be too difficult to jury rig something that works really well by flipping the shockmount around so that it holds the PVC pipe vertically and then figuring out a way to have some fittings hold your capsules for coincident mounting.

Thanks for the input guys!

There is really only 1 venue where I would have to run XY (the 9:30 Club) so I'm very down for a homebrew job.  Perhaps a mini vert bar? thin rings of PVC with some rubber to hold the mic body in, mounted on a swivel screw.

I'll experiment and see what I come up with.

you could def do a pvc xy
you would need a few more connectors like 90* ones but it would be pretty easy i think

90* at top
90* on bottom
straight in between them
straight out of the 90* > 45* with caps inside
long enough screw to hook onto your stand
adjust the 90* ends to make the correct angle
glue it in the correct place
Mics - AKG ck61/ck63 (c480b & Naiant actives), SP-BMC-2
XLR Cables - Silver Path w/Darktrain stubbies
Interconnect Cables - Dogstar (XLR), Darktrain (RCA > 1/8) (1/8 > 1/8), and Kind Kables (1/8f > 1/4)
Preamps - Naiant Littlebox & Tinybox
Recorders - PCM-M10 & DR-60D

OH man, sniffle.  I miss the 9:30.  Actually, what I reallllly miss is the 8x10 / Funk Box / 8x10...my favorite venue on mother earth.

Since I moved to Pittsburgh, there are some good venue's but unfortunately da burgh has nothing that I've been to that compares with either the 9:30 or the 8x10.  In fact, there's nothing here to even compare with the Balto Rams Head.

You miss the 9:30.... uck... Good shows come through there for sure, bonus because it's in my neighborhood, but I cannot stand the crowd or where they make us setup.

8x10 now requires you to patch into their house mics, good or bad, that's up to you.

I love the State Theater.  I can basically get away with whatever I want there, and half the time I never pay to see a show.  That's what I like.

8x10 doesn't allow open taping anymore?  That's too bad.  At least they give patches, so I guess that's a compromise.

Yes, 9:30 is great because of the bands that play there.

Man, don't bitch because you have no idea how good you have it there in the DC area until you move away.  I mean, the music scene there is great and you never have a shortage of hot shows that you can go out and see.  Here in Pittsburgh, we're off the path for the east coast swing so-to-speak for bands that are traveling up and down the coast from Boston/New York/Philly/DC on down through the Carolinas or maybe Richmond and then down into the Asheville area and places like that.

Pittsburgh gets a bit of a crowd that travels east-west, but the main music traffic flow is north-south along the coast.  So, even if you don't like the venues, you need to realize how good you have it because when it's not there anymore, you really REALLY miss it.  The important thing is having the shows to go see, not necessarily that they are in the best venues.

Funny you mention the State because I liked the State OK for the sake of seeing shows...nice and relaxed environment in a nice room, but to me it was the absolute worst venue I've ever taped in.  The dynamics in that room totally suck to my ears and I got a few tapes that were almost unlistenable because they were so full of room reverb.  To me, the only way to get a good tape in that room is with the mics about 20 feet from the stacks.  Course with a nice rig and good set of hypers, maybe it would be different.

Course you can't argue with the fact that you get in for nothing.  What a great perk!

I'm not bitchin too much, it's still pretty great.   ;D  I just don't like playing Center and trying to block during crowded shows.  I think I might start stealthing at the center balc.

The state sounds great so long as the House soundguy is not running sound.  Then it sounds like ASS.  Best bet is to hang mics over the sbd area with a boom, or split them on each end of the board.

I'm surprised PGH doesn't have better shows, the rust belt cities seem to get alot of good stuff.  I know Cleveland does.  Right now i'm missin real hard Buffalo which I just moved from.  So many great free outdoor shows and a community that was second to none.

Don't get me wrong.  There's some great shows come this way and we're only an hour from All Good site.  You mention free summer shows and Pittsburgh's no exception.  For example, we've got a fest in June where all the shows are free and the bands include:

RRFB
Loyus
Spyro Grya
Ozomotli
Grace Potter
Koko Taylor
Los Lonely Boys

Then later in the summer there's another free fesitival series at Pt. State park where last year we saw:

moe.
Gov't Mule
Soulive
Violent femmes

Then there was an even different free series at another venue that hosted:

Umphreys
Grace potter
and a couple others that I can't remember.

So, pittsburgh isn't a bad place to be, but I just lament missing the 8x10 and those venues which like I said were really my favorites.  I have to say though that 8x10 would go down a notch for me if I could no longer tape there.
