Recordings sound too quiet
«
on:

My recordings have the loudest parts at just under 0 dB yet when I play back it all sounds too quiet on any system.
Even after mixing, this still happens.
Is there any way to boost the sounds without distorting the signal over 0 dB?

Above 0 dB recording will produce clipping distortions. Live recordings are NOT compressed to sound extra loud like commercially produced music. You just may be used to listening to compressed stuff and need to simply turn up the playback volume.

or...compress it. Don't slam it, just do a 4:1 compression and set your threshold around the average volume. I know, it's a big "no no" in the live recording world but if it's too dynamic to listen to pleasurably then it is.

Guysonic is right, but sometimes I do compress a slight amount like 2:1. Anything I torrent is not compressed.

I normally just crank up the volume on my stereo
Don't worry about it, as long as you normalize to -0.1 you're ok.
