n00b with £150 limit
« on: June 02, 2007, 07:40:39 PM »
Hey all, n00b here, but I have lurked for a day or two, reading things, and you all know so much. So, my question is what can you suggest for in the region of £150, give or take?

Thanks in advance

150 GBP = 300 USD

In USA, that amount will buy a Sony MZ-RH1 or an M-Audio Microtrack 2496.  Without knowing more about your intended recording subjects and venues it's hard to recommend one over the other.

If your budget of 150 GBP is to cover mics and recorder, then you'll need to look at used equipment.  The iRiver H120 with Rockbox software or the Creative Jukebox 3 are two inexpensive recorders that you can find on the used equipment market.  Also check out used Sony Hi-MD recorders.

I probably should have stated it was for indoor live concerts  ;D my bad. It will have to cover the mic too, so I will look at the Creative Jukebox 3 too, thanks  :)
Also fixed the title  ::)

Good Luck.

I think you will struggle to put together a full rig for that budget, but it is always good to see more UK based Tapers on board.

If you can push your budget a little, I would look for a used iRiver, (H1xx/H3xx model), and contact Chris Church (Church Audio on this board), regarding one of his preamp/mics packages.

This will give you a good starter rig.

I managed to assemble mine for around £170, although I managed to hit on an eBay auction which got largely ignored, so I picked up an iRiver for a relatively low price.

Always Taping Under The Influence.

I was under the assumption that as a taper, we're all geeks?  I just thought it went with the territory?

Are we talking loud rock concerts? Then I'd go for the cardoids of Chris Church, and maybe a batterybox.
And look for an iriver h120/h140/h320/h340.
Later you can always add a pre-amp,.... ;)

Yes we are, hence my username ;)
I'll not bother thinking about preamps yet, no point in spending shedloads on it to find out I suck at taping ;D

Maybe you should have waited to start the thread 'til you got the cash...

Anyways, I also suggest the Church cards, cheap batt box and either iRiver or Mini-Disc.
Mics:
AT933/C

Batt-Boxes, Pre-amps:
CA-9100

Recorders:
Edirol R-09
iRiver H120 (CF Modded)
Sony MZ-RH910 Hi-MD

Video: Canon HV20 E

Well this way, I have plenty of time to think about my decision, rather than rushing in when I have the cash.

Thanks for the suggestions though :)
