Shockmount for Kwonbar?
« on: June 18, 2007, 12:58:55 AM »
Looking to run schoeps actives with a kwon bar but the high price of the schoeps A20 shockmount is a real turnoff.

What are the alternatives? So far I've discovered the JoeMeeks JM27 and Studio Projects C4 shockmounts as being possible alternatives.

Can anyone confirm these ~$20 shockmounts would do the trick? They won't see heavy use.

I have the meeks and I've been told by someone experienced (sorry, I can't remember who turned me onto the Meeks) that the inner tube that holds the mic bodies is the same size as the one in the A20 mount.  Of course, I don't have the A20 and haven't owned one, so I can't confirm.  But I CAN tell you that the MBHO bodies slide into them and with a perfect fit.  I think the HO's are 21 mm outside diameter, but I'm going from memory...pretty sure the 603a body dimensions are posted on the MBHO website though so you can confirm the OD if you want to for comparison with the OD of your Schoeps.

I'm fairly happy with the Meeks.  Since these are the first mounts I've owned, I can't say for sure about what's a good design and what's not, but my wish for the Meeks is that the elastic bands were a bit more supple.  When I have the HO's mounted DIN, the weight of the cables causes the mics to sag a bit in the back, so I have to adjust the Meeks to account for the sag.

However, like I said I'm not sure that this is the elastic as much as the design.  For example, if the mount had two barrels with two sets of elastic, then there wouldn't be any sagging issues because each mic would have two points of support.

Also, I'd think that for a Kwon bar setup, where you're only using one shockmount to support your mics (and the mount is pointing sideways instead of forward), the Meeks would work fine because the load on both sides of the Kwon would be balanced out so that there wouldn't be any worries about sagging.

Hope this helps.

This is what I use. Works perfectly! It is a tad bit lower profile than the A20 as well.

I used this one a few times but I had to put a few round felt sticky pads in the cradle to keep the kwon bar from sliding out. The shure A53m is probably the way to go though. It costs more but should last longer as it isn't plastic.

Update... after contacting cascade, they also recommended the shure a53m. They said it fits perfectly, which was my main concern. The shockmount itself doesn't look that high tech though as there are no elastic bands. Perhaps this will be a blessing in disguise.

Thanks for all the great suggestions and tonedeaf... i'm running to home depot tonight to try and make a DIY kwonbar for my mbhos!
