Rode NT5's vs. Studio Projects C4's???
« on: June 28, 2007, 06:02:48 PM »
Anyone have any opinions between these two mics?  Which one is better?  I have C4s now but was thinking of moving to something a bit better without breaking the bank and I came across a matched pair of NT5's for $300...so I am wondering the if the NT5's would be an upgrade or just a lateral change?

Any info is greatly appreciated!  ;D

Rode NT5's will not make better tapes.   They sound great up-close, as a pair of drum overheads etc....  They sound like shit from the taperssection.

You will have to spen a good bit more to make an improvement over the the C4's....

Thanks for the response!  I have a little bit of moolah right now and thought i might upgrade...but It is pretty hard to beat the C4's for anything around their pricepoint.

Thanks...

A rode NT4 mic is (I believe) a pair of NT5 capsules mounted in a fixed XY position.  My friend has an NT4 and it sounds good.  Each person's ears are different... you may like the sound of the Rodes.  I have a tape I made with my Naks, and of the same show made with expensive european mics, and to my ears, I like my source better. "Better" is a matter of taste.

You best friend is your own ears and the LMA:

I would say if you are happy with what you are pulling with the C4's stick with them.  If you aren't happy or you just want to try something else try them.

If I was looking to move up from C4's, I'd be giving the beyer MC930's a very hard look at $765/pair. Disclaimer: I've run c4's but not mc930's.

QFT... or AKG 460's which can be had used for ~$600

And the Peluso CEMC6's. Between those 3 mics, you should find a nice upgrade to your ears.

I'll second that as this is the path I have taken so far.  C4s -> AKG 460s.  Gotta love that transformer sound!

I don't know the C4, but I had an NT4.  Using it in my home studio, I thought it was an outstanding mic for the money, especially flattering to my voice.
Using it from out in the audience . . . . eh, not so hot, at least not without hitting the eq. in post.

I have a pair of NT5's and have been really happy with them. They are very detailed and I have pulled some good recordings from the TS in the XY configuration. They have a different sound from my AKG's and that is why I keep them around. For the money, they are tough to beat. What don't you like about your C4's? Have you tested the NT5's yet?

I use the NT5's as overheads. Wouldn't put them anywhere else.

I went from c4s (which I still have) to Peluso cemc6s and the difference is astounding. The Pelusos can be had brand new with all the bells and whistles for less than 700 a pair ( I got mine with cards and hypers used for 550) and they are a huge jump in quality from the c4s but not a huge jump in price. I'll prob keep the c4s for omnis and get subcards for the Pelusos.
I have also heard great tapes pulled with the Beyers although I have never run them.

The new SP site is delayed, so no link yet...I think about $100.00 for the matched pair of Hypers...
