Microtrack s/PDIF Question
« on: July 02, 2007, 01:13:54 AM »
I'm new to the Microtrack. Tonite I tried to record some audio off of a homemade DVD using the digital input. No luck ???,all I got was a motor boat sound. I have the latest firmware(as of last week)and I was running off the back of my dvd player. Is there an issue here I'm missing? DRM or anything?
Thx

try playing a regular audio cd in the dvd player if you want to test the digital in.

It may be due to a sample rate mismatch that you could not get signal from the DVD.  Almost all DVDs are at 48khz.  So, if you were set to 44.1khz, it may not recognize/accept the input.

Well the MicroTrack can record via S/PDIF up to 96k and it auto-senses the input signal so I would have guessed it would have worked. I theory that just popped into my head is that maybe the player wasn't outputting on S/PDIF expect when playing a CD.

Maybe plug something else (like a receiver) in to that output and verify something is actually coming out when playing a DVD (I'm guessing that's what you were playing before?).  You might even unplug the analog cables just so you're 100% certain that if you do hear something that it's coming out of the S/PDIF.

Lastly since the MicroTrack is new to you, understand that you must have the signal going already 'before' pressing record on the MicroTrack so that it has a clock to lock onto and also remember that you cannot monitor the signal on the MIcroTrack's headphone (or RCA jacks for that matter).  Only analog recordings can be monitored.

Hope some of this helps and hope you have fun with your new toy.

I was just about to ask this question regarding the MT and utilizing the s/pdif input. You say that the signal should already be sending to the MT BEFORE you press record. So let's say I've got everything plugged in and ready to go, I'm just waiting for the band to come on stage. Since everything is plugged in the signal should be transmitting already, I'm just waiting to hit the record button, correct?

Reason I ask is because I could have sworn that I read in another thread that you need to plug the S/pdif into the MT then turn it "ON" and then you can hit record and should be good to go. Could anyone clarify this for me?

I've suggested on several occasions that MT users feed a live S/PDIF signal before powering on, due to initial problems I had with my unit.  Firmware updates may have addressed that issue, I don't know for sure as I no longer have an MT.

So let's say I've got everything plugged in and ready to go, I'm just waiting for the band to come on stage. Since everything is plugged in the signal should be transmitting already, I'm just waiting to hit the record button, correct?

Yes, that's correct.
