Topic: Combined 2 Tracks w/ Audacity, now won't export as 24 bit

ok i combined 2 tracks with the copy/paste method and now want to export the new single track as a 24/48 file which is what the original 2 files were. i have the setting in preferences set to 24 bit PCM wav. i turned off any dithering setting. i go to export and the resulting file continues to be a 16/48 file. i can't figure out why it is dithering to 16?? TIA

Per the Audacity workflow thread, you need at least these three settings correct to perform this operation properly, with a 24-bit output:

• Preferences | File Formats | Uncompressed Export Format | Other... | WAV / Signed 24-bit PCM (this determines the file output bit-depth)
• Preferences | Quality | High-quality dither | Triangle (or your preference; simply type of dither used;  related to next bullet)
• Track dropdown | Set Sample Format | 32-bit float (this will ensure your mixdown is done with 32bfp precision before its dithered down to 24-bit per the above two bullets; do this for each track you're mixing)
