Help editing my show please
« on: July 14, 2007, 11:27:29 AM »
I just taped my first show last night and now need help editing it. I recorded in Wav 44.1.

What program do I use?

How do I split my file into songs?

The volume is low, how do I increase this?

What steps should I take?

Thanks,
Paul

Free editing program - Audacity, you can boost your levels with the "amplify" option

Splitting the tracks - shareware program, CD Wave Editor

Both easy to find with Google

It says the trial period is 31 days for CD Wave Editor. Can I use it after that?

I'm using Audacity and amplifying it. I have two files, how do I join them? It also says its 32bit float, but 16bit is what's standard, how do I change? Do I export as wav?

You can split tracks easily using Audacity.  Just an FYI.

You need to read this before you proceed:  http://taperssection.com/index.php/topic,71191.0.html

You want it to be 32bit float while you are editing.

As far as adding two files, I think I imported both files into Audacity and then just cut and pasted....I'll need to check though.

Yes, export as wav.

CD Wave is shareware.  The software will not cripple itself and/or otherwise prevent you from continuing to use it after the trial 31 days.  However, the shareware license requires you to purchase the software if you continue to use it beyond the trial days.  If you do continue using it, the purchase price is a very small price to pay for such a well-designed, easy-to-use tool.

Alternatively, you can use Audacity to split tracks.  I don't think the workflow to which taylordb linked covers configuring Audacity to split tracks so there are no sector boundary errors, though.  At any rate, it's pretty easy, but I don't have it in front of me to add to the workflow thread at the moment.

And take taylordb's advice:  you really do need to read and understand the workflow thread to which he linked.  Same goes for any software editor, Audacity just happens to have one, while other common audio editing s/w does not (yet?).

To split tracks using Audacity (Brian you showed me how  :) ):

Make the following settings:
View > Set Selection Format > cdda min:sec:frames 75 fps
Edit > Snap-to > Snap On

Then, position your cursor where you want to split the track then do:

Project > Add Label at Selection  (alternatively you could use the "apple key" + B)

Repeat this for each track.

I have also found that I need to add a track split at the very beginning of the show in order to export all of the show to wav
