Topic: Edirol R-09 without mics

I received my R-09 the other day and man is it sweet! Nice little piece of equipment. I played around with it in my den, cranking up the speakers (some little Yamaha bookshelf speakers) and stood about 20' away and the sound was great. Not perfect mind you, but very nice for the onboard mics! I'm going to take it to a couple clubs this weekend just to see what kind of results I can get, just for fun. (I have some CA mics and pre coming.) This thing actually recorded pretty nicely stuck inside a shirt pocket, which might come in handy for the White Stripes 7-30 in Southhaven, Miss. russ3523

Like I told you in a previous thread, the internal mics are not awesome, but can do a pretty decent job depending of your location. Good luck

manual level start with 15 and check the levelmeter at the beginning of the show.

then all should be fine .

Thanks Arni, I believe that's what it's set on now, but I'll check before I go out this weekend. I'm going to tape some local bands with just the R-09 (Chris C. is building my mics and pre). They will both me much louder than my home stereo, so I'm sure I'll be cutting the levels way down.

But here's a question, If there's no sound check, which most of the bands don't do, how do you anticipate how high/low to set the rec. levels? Trial and Error? Experience? Ballpark it and go up or down during the first song? I suppose I'll find out this weekend.

I asked the bands and they're fine with it. I'll have to look for some places to put up a mic stand later because I'll be hitting these places again. Thanks, Russ C.

simply start with levels all way down and when the concerts starts make a nice fade-in starting with 0 and going up to ie. level 15 or more if needed.

I have never recorded anything other than my home stereo with the internals but with my CA cards>stc9100>R-09 i set the R-09 at about 8 ((unity) I have made it as high as 12 once) and set the pre to about about 70% on its gain knob.  I think my Gov't Mule and Hank III tapes turned out nice with those settings.

You'll learn alot this weekend have fun man!

It is real nice to have those internals to fall back on if/when you have an external mic problem.  Happened to me recently... Realized that the battery in my preamp was dead so I had no power to my mics, and there was no way I was gonna find one of those little 12V batteries in time for the show.  Used the internals instead... not great, but decent enough.

Well, I won't have any mics for a couple weeks, but I'm dying to try this thing out. The place I'm going Sunday would be hard to tape in the center. It's a pool hall with an elevated stage, like 10 feet in the air. Yeah, not the greatest situation. I'll have to tape from the left or right side, but I can get close and it's loud! Another place I want to go I still wouldn't tape in the center of the floor (a bar basically) because of the dancers/drunks), but I can get a table, I hope on the right side which is close to center. A mic stand would work in that place better and the bands plays out of a corner, sort of and the right side is close to center. Like I said, it's experimentation time! rWc3523

Just an FYI. The unity at 8 level is a myth and not true.

Oh I had a good time during the music festival! Taped under a wide variety of situations: indoors, outdoors, good systems, poor systems, crowd noise, quiet venues, noisy venues, DFC, off to the side, open taping, stealthing. And believe it or not, everything was listenable (at least to a new guy who is very happy with his new toy).  At least I'm very familiar with my R-09 (love it so far). I'll have to start over when I get the mics, I guess, but it definitely helped. Getting a decent pull from my shirt pocket at an outdoor White Stripes show was a blast. My son and I listened to it on the way home! Still a little leery about hitting the road to unknown venues. Don't want to have problems with a new rig.
