Topic: Real quick advice

I am doing a test with my Edirol R-09

I am going to record a show using the built in mics...I am bringing my other recorder with my good mics to record with as well....but can someone give me quick advice with the built in mics? Should my mic gain be high or low?

Eric, I am far from an expert with the R-09, but with my brief experience, it depends on what you're recording. I found high mic gain helpful when I couldn't get close to the band or if their sound system wasn't very loud. I did a lot of recording with the internal mics last week during a music festival here (no mics yet) and experimented a lot with them. I didn't need high gain with bassy bands either. I taped the White Stripes from my seat about 100 feet from the stage last night with mic gain on low and got great levels and decent sound (for what I was doing and running).

Hopefully some of the more experienced guys will post, but I've played with mine quite a bit since I got it. rWc3523

Yeah, I'm lucky I did a lot of open taping with mine. Never maxed anything out. Had a few that were a little low, but they were still listenable. I maxed a few seconds of one show and it showed. But it was all part of the learning curve, I guess. The thing is, I really got some decent recordings with the internal mics, especially a couple shows where I was DFC and about 15 feet from the monitors. I set it during an opening band for the White Stripes last night and was too paranoid (first stealth) to screw with it, but the levels were fine for the most part. Meg's bass drum peaked several times, but nothing to severe. Still, for me, it was a success 'cause I can listen to it! rWc3523

Thanks for the advice rWc3523! I'm going to be about 27 rows back...so I figured it was worth the shot to ask.

I just asked for advice. I don't like the Edirol at all. I have recorded 4 shows and I don't like the quality. I guess I am too old school with the Mini Disc.

Like with most decks including the R-09, the 'recording quality' you get is mostly determined by the mics and how you are using them.  Of course you could also be making the wrong setting choices on a deck and get trash sound, but this is users error and NOT the fault of the deck lacking a quality recording process.

I am harsh on my own recordings and they really aren't that bad but I just don't like the unit itself. I know I am crazy haha
