I have the R-09 with the Church Audio (Cardiod ST11) with a Stereo Mic Preamp CA9100.

Say I wanted to record some rock shows....1st show may be Black Crowes at Mizner Park (Outside)

Can someone help me on the controls.  I am listing below my current settings

1.  AGC - Off
2.  EXT MIC TYPE - Stereo
3.  Low Cut - Off
4.  Mic Gain - Low
5.  Sample Rate - 44.1
6.  Rec Mode - wav 16bit
7.  Max File Size - 2GB
8.  Input Setup - Record Monitor Sw. - On
9.  Input Setup - Plug In Power - Off....this one I have no idea
10.  Input Level - 20....I will adjust at the show right   
11.  I was told to plug in mics to line in...not mic in...please confirm this.

If you have other settings that I forgot please do not hesitate to tell me.

Once I actaully record a show, then I will have fun getting to disc and BT.....I have CD Wave editor that can split the tracks and move them to FLAC Files....so it should be fun.

Sounds like you have the right idea, but I'm a novice myself and have only taped with the R-09 and internal mics, but got some nice results, depending on venue and sound system. The only thing I've really played with is the mic gain, depending on my position and the sound system. I taped the White Stripes in Mississippi Tuesday from about 100 feet right of the stage and kept my mic gain on low, but the show was very loud.

I'm sure some experienced R-09 users will help you out later one. There's plenty of them here and they've been very helpful to me.

You might want to try 24 bit, 48 kHz.  There are a number of threads discussing the benefits of recording at 24 bit.

I think you only use the plug in power "on" if you are using condensor mics.  I use basically the same gear as you and have mine set to "off" and have never had a problem.

use your church cardioids + preamp on line-in at 24bit 44,1kHz.
set the edirol´s gain to 8 of 30(unity gain) and the preamp to 100%.
then check the levels and if u still need more gain use the edirols internal preamp.
plugin-power: off => only needed when using your mics without a preamp or battery box on mic-in.
AGC:off
ext.mic: stereo
low-cut: off
mic-gain: low (no impact when using line-in)

5.  Sample Rate - 44.1
6.  Rec Mode - wav 16bit (Better to use 24 bit; get 4 GIG SDHC card)
7.  Max File Size - 2GB (deck will span to next 2 GIG with +v1.10)

9.  Input Setup - Plug In Power - Off....this one I have no idea (OFF if powering mic with external preamp)
10.  Input Level - 20....I will adjust at the show right (Maybe start with #15-#20 range until knowing best setting)

Echoing what someone else said, you want to:
1. Use a large enough SD card for 24-bit 44.1KHZ.  Most software used for any processing after the fact, will work much better with 24-bit .wav files.

2. Connectthe preamp to the line in jack, not mc in.

3.  Set the R-09 record level to 8.  Turn the preamp up all the way.

That is way over the sensitivty of the ADC. You'll be attenuating what your expensive pre-amp is amplifying.

I thought it was well known that the unity gain at 8 is a myth.
At 8 we have about 2,18Vrms, 6,18Vpp? Is that right?

At around #17 Line input it seems 1 volt RMS (gives about full scale VU) so this is good for most low voltage battery operated preamps to use as starting setting.

There is NO separate ADC inside R-09, or preamp IC stages as EVERYTHING is inside ONE codec IC doing preamp, ADC, and DAC processing.

Do you have the type-# of the Codec somewhere? Then we can have a look at the datasheet and see at what setting the amplification is 1.

Is the codec's AD really used? the AD is not so good on the datasheet.

And again:

The codec can do 12 dB of attenuation and 59.5 dB of amplification (see http://focus.ti.com/lit/ds/symlink/tlv320aic32.pdf).
So if the codec is the right one and the AD in there is used, how does this fit in with the 'typical' 0.707Vrms input level in the datasheet and the level-ranges we measured from the unit? (16 - -13 dBu)
12 dB from the top down does not land me on level 17?

Recommended operating conditions mention the 0.707Vrms as well...

Might save a little bit of battery power if turned off regardless of having nothing plugged into the phones jack.  I've always left it on so not to be surprised my phones don't work if wanting to monitor after starting a recording.

Always a chance there's lower recorded noise/distortion if turned off regardless of having phones plugged, but nobody's done testing for this to verify recording quality improvement of any kind happens with monitoring turned OFF.
