Recorder Upgrade
« on: August 12, 2007, 04:14:28 PM »
I tape with a Sony Hi-MD MZ-NH700 for 2 years now and I'm thinking about upgrading.

So I'd like to know what recorder you'd think I should upgrade to ?

I'd like to get either a HDD or Flash Cards recorder and I'd also want it stealth.

I'm pretty interested in the iRiver and the Edirol R-09.

Any other suggestions or any comments on those are welcome.

Thanks for helping me!

iriver iHP-120 refurbished.
great easy toy.
with rockbox firmware it´s wonderful.

Very interesting Arni99. So I see that you got both recorders. In your opinion which is the best ?

from 100%-stealth-taping point of view: no external preamp!
for taping silent or moderately loud stuff, I would choose the sony mz-rh1(HI-MD) recorder(it´s preamp is better than the r09´s or iriver´s).

for loud stuff:
I´d choose a high-sens cardioid mic like the MM-HLSC-1 which doesn´t distort at high SPL+bbox+R09 recorder on line-in

-if u need more than 8 hours recording go for the edirol where u can use rechargeables.

the irver is a great player too and i often use it for optical transferring tv-concerts from my dvd recorder´s harddisk.

IF I needed to decide between these 2 and money doesn´t matter, I´d take both HAHA! ;)

it´s really a hard question.

you see my gear in my sig and after 1 year of testing this is MY favourite setting(right now HAHA).

In case you mostly tape silent stuff the RH1 is hard to beat...if you can live with 94min55sec WAV recording on a 1GB HI-MD or 7h56min in HI-SP-recording mode (atrac3 256kbit/s).

here 2 samples of RH1+bbox+line-in with church cardioids:

I will not get a RH1 because the main reason that makes me want to upgrade is Sony's great transfering program SonicStage...

I have Soundman OKM II Rock microphones with Soundman A3 and I'm very happy with it.

I guess I'll get a R-09 for 2 reasons.

1) for Festival taping
2) for 48Hz / 24 bits recording

Good choice. I second the Iriver too, but if you can afford an R-09, go for that.

Mics:
AT933/C

Batt-Boxes, Pre-amps:
CA-9100

Recorders:
Edirol R-09
iRiver H120 (CF Modded)
Sony MZ-RH910 Hi-MD

yeah, of course, rechargeables+high resolution recording are 2 pro´s for the r09.
keep in mind you need at least 3 or 4  "4GB-SD-(HC)" cards for festivals of 2 or 3 days.

24bit/44.1kHz =>4h13min on a 4GB card.
24bit/48kHz=>3h55min on a 4GB card.
for a 3 day festival with 8 hours taping a day this makes 24 hours => so you need 6 x 4GB sd cards.

using an h120 or h140 you need an external battery-pack(USB) or you charge your iriver while sleeping(full charge takes about 3 hours).
on a h120 in 16bit wav you can record 3h23(2GB)x9=>~30-32 hours. ;)

If you're on a tight budget, the Iriver is great value. I'm totally happy with mine.
For festivals, I always rent a bungalow/camping cottage (and bring my car), so charging is not a problem anymore.

Arni, sorry to hijack the thread but can you elaborate? Are you just recording the music realtime optically from the DVD-recorder, or do you actually transfer the data files (video) over the optical cable? I'm interested to know what works...

REALTIME optical transfer of AUDIO from my panasonic dvd recorder´s harddisk to my rockboxed ihp-120.

I press PLAY on my dvd-recorder ....the concert shows on TV and at the same time I record the AUDIO stream on optical-in(tosslink cable) on my ihp-120.

If you have the budget get a Korg MR-1 - hands down  ;D

20GB HDD
Big display with easy to read levels
Easy to use
24-bit upto 192Khz or DSD (1bit 2.8Mhz - SACD quality)
Very small

You will have to run an external battery with it, if you want to run longer than an hour or so.

I have run my at 3 shows so far and love it!

(You can grab them on ebay for $550 or so)
Music can at the least least explain you and at the most expand you
LMA Recordings

Don't think I can afford it  :P

So one last question. Is 24 bits recording really worth it ?

So I have one last question for you guys before I take a decision. In terms of sound quality what would give me the best results : DAT recorder (such as TCD-D7) or the Edirol R-09 ?

Thanks for helping me once again.
