So as a total Nub I would like to know what recording devices and microphone set up would you suggest for recording a live concert.

Going too a live event and leaning to the side of stealth. I want a good recording device coupled with a good microphone. Price is not so much a factor but then I don't really want to spend more that $500 for the gear.

For around $500 total or even less: You could get an iRiver h120/h140/h320/h340 and rockbox it, plus some AT mics and a battery box to run between or a Church mic/batterybox-preamp deal (you should read up on battery boxes, as there are many choices (i.e. 2-wire (and you could opt to have your AT mics 4.7k modded); 3-wire; or go phantom power (which adds some cost and some bulk).

You can find irivers on eBay or in the yardsale here -- I think the going price now is anywhere from $150 - $200, although sometimes you can snag one for significantly less. You could buy an Edirol R-09, if you wanted to spend a little more on the recorder (you can probably find one for less than $350 new if you shop around).  You could keep an eye on eBay and pick up a used Edirol R-1 for $250 or less.

You could get brand new AT831s from SP for well under $200; or there are some AT853s and AT943s in the yardsale right now for $200 each.  Also, Chris Church sells an inexpensive mic/pre-amp set, which has gotten strong reviews from a lot of folks.  (if you don't get a church combo, you can pick up a 2-wire or 3-wire battery box for $50-$100, there's usually some battery boxes in the yardsale for under $50.

Probably the best thing to do is to spend some hours (or days!) reading various posts on this site, and weighing the pro's and con's of each option, so you can make an informed decision and ask more pointed questions.  Every option has its pluses and minuses, so each person has to decide what's most important (and affordable) to them.

More like days/weeks/months...See that's how "they" got me! Before you know it you'll have a stealth rig and an open taping rig. But you'll enjoy every minute of it!

QFT.

This is probably the best stealth setup you can get for less than $500.
Read the FAQ too, but it's a bit antiquated:

Thanks for all of the suggestions. I am now in the biding for an Iriver H120. After I have that I will be looking for a microphone set up to go with it.
