 I'd like to read your opinions of MM-HLSC-1 compared with AT853u cardiods, on outdoor
 venues with imperfect acoustic, specially. There's a lot of people that love the AT but
 I if wonder if for the same price the one of Sennheiser, will work better in high SPL.
 Does the low sens mod of AT result in a flat signal ?

I had the sp-cmc-4u with the sp-low-sens-mod and now i have the mm-hlsc-1.
will send you 2 samples from the same venue(outdoor show) with lots of people, i was taping from the same spot both times....I love this little tree .

The low-sens mod decreases sensitivity ...about 12db less sensitive.....which makes it harder for silent to moderately loud stuff without using a preamp.

Both are great mics....just a matter of taste.
Senns are more versatile as they are high sens(normal sensitivity) AND don´t distort at high SPL.
You can use them for both loud and silent stuff.
That´s why I went for the Sennheisers.

I like the HLSC-1 more than the U853c.  However, the U853 has modular capsules (omni, sub card, card, hyper, shotgun)

Nothing will beat the U853 for distant outdoor recording using the 853/shotgun...

  Well it's clear that distortion could solved with a manual level control be but nothing
  to do with loss of sens.  I'm tryin' to decide what mics to buy with my gear
  that will be a Tascam HD-P2. DPA 40xx is a great option but i have rule out it
  for the high price. I know that cheap mics will result a equipment so much "imbalanced"
  then i must decide the more suitable mic for this great recorder...
  Supposing that  MM-HLSC-1 must be pluged on Tascam's RCA line-in and not on common
  phantom power (48 V) a battery box will be necessary ? HD-P2 use eight AA

If I were you I would get a pair of AT853RX used from ebay. Recently I bought 50usd a pair. Try it out with the Tascam and if you are not happy with the result you can still sell it for that money fast. The advantage or AT853RX is that it can be used with the Tascam without any additional battery box.

I have the MM-HLSC-1 and the SP-CMC-4U.  I like both.  I hate to get into vague descriptions which will mean something different to you, possibly, than to me but I hear the SP's as "warmer" and more forgiving.  They can deal with a poor venue better.  However, I have had great luck with the MM's to.  But they seem a bit less "warm" to me and a bit more "analytical."  These are such subjective and vague descriptions, but they seem in common use, also, so perhaps you can sort it all out.  I may still have tracks I recorded simoultaneously with two MD's, side by side.  If you want I will see if I can find them

I would love to hear some of these.  How do you feel the low end on the MM and SP mics compare?

Will -  I will see if I can find them.  The SP's have more accented bass.  These are both good mics, especially in this price range.  Give me a day or so to find them.  If I do, I will put them in this thread.

ADDED:  I checked and it looks like I do not have recordings in SP of the same thing, different MD and different mics.  If you can wait a week, I will take the MD's with me when I do a regular gig and record the tracks on the MD's and post them.  I will do a track with each and then switch the mic between the MD's and record a second track to rule out any difference induced by the different recorders.
