MT - CF card 24/48 query
« on: September 16, 2007, 03:12:01 PM »
hey all,,,

ive done major reading here and really cant find the answer that im looking for, so here goes...

im new to the microtracker and heres what im running:

- 24/48 recording
- 4GB CF sandisk card
    as seen here    http://tinyurl.com/yptq49
- spdif in via mini me

i keep reading that at the above settings, i should get a total of 4 hrs on the card, with the 2gb split @ just under 2hrs recording time...

im getting only a 2 hr TOTAL recording time with the split @ around 58 minutes.
^edit^  thats what the 'rec time avail' in the menu states

card formatted a-ok on the mt

firmware 1.4.6

is all this data 'right' or am i perhaps getting a bad reading from the combo of the mt & this specific card?

thanks for yr patience since i cant seem to find my answer even after a couple hours of reading.  i did see some mention of using 'dummy' files on certain cf cards in order for them to be giving proper recording times available.

chris

^^edit#2^  when recording, @ the bottom of the screen (where the levels are) is a XX.XX.XX/1:55:XX.  is this telling me that im ok with the ~2hr/2 gig split @ around 1h:55?

^^edit#3^ after saving a few small files, & then starting a new recording, i still get the 1h:55 remaining on the levels' screen...

if you are getting a reading of 1:55 left for record time then you are on 24/48 (thats what i get too)
if you record a small file and then the 2nd file still says 1:55 thats because you are not "over" the time left - no matter how many files you record, you will see 1:55 until there is less then 1:55 remaining on the card

as for the 2 hr total, if i recall mine gave me a total time, in the menu, that was incorrect too
as long as when you start to record you see 1:55 i wouldn't worry about it much

Yea, I was freaking out about that too. I have a few 4gig cards and a couple of 8gig cards as well. I've recently been running the MT with an UA-5 using the s/pdif and noticed it doesn't show recording time remaining accurately. But once you start recording in 24/48 you still get about an hour per gig. I think it has to do with the s/pdif setting on the MT. It doesn't say which sample rate you are taping at it only says automatic. So you can still choose between 16bit and 24bit but you can't pick the other. I guess it is determined at the UA-5 in my case which is set to 48.

You should update to the latest firmware - no problems that I'm aware of...

You should see both a time on media and a max time per file listing.  With 1/4" input selected for the input the record settings menu shows 03:56:17 total time on media and 01:55:44 max time per file on a 4gb freshly formatted CF card.

On the S/PDIF setting I notice the sample rate setting changes to auto and the total time on media and file readings are half of the 1/4".  This means that the S/PDIF setting is actually 24/96 or there is a bug in the software.  The numbers match what you see if you set 24/96 with the 1/4" input.

In this case you get less than an hour before the 2gb file limit and you need a bigger card to go over 1:55

so I think it is reporting the maximum time available if your input is at 24/96.  Since it appears the input sets the frequency (ie the auto) then the software does not seem to be able to adjust the recording time available if your input is less that 96 and thus the problems with reporting accurate time.

I think the rec time might be accurate if you use a 24/96 input but I do not have the equipment to test.

I would be happy if you could tell how much longer the battery would last!
