I may have the opportunity to run one this weekend.  I never have before and am kinda nervous about it.



Tips on how I should run it?

The guy that owns it was dear friends with John...I believe is name is Andy.  He introduced himself to me the first time he ran it.  He was pretty scared about running it, be we figured it out.

It makes me sick to know what he paid for it.  I offered to quadruple his money, but it was a no go

It's a sweet mic and I'd love to run one again sometime.

What's the situation like - venue? size? taping position? can you get fob? what type of music?

One thing to pay attention to is making sure the mic is facing straight ahead. It sounds silly but with the way the mic is shaped it can turn in the shockmount, just a few degrees and you'll hear it.

Get back with more details and I'm sure Nick can give you some great advice. I'll chip in with what I know too

-20db pad ENGAGED !!!!!!
first and foremost.

one of 4 methods from here:
1. blumlein.  put it in figure of 8 and width straight up at 12:00 (90deg).  Hard to beat, given good recording situations. 
2. Cards (or a little less/more) at 90-130deg (12>2:30 on the width dial).
3. M-S
4. B-format (4chan raw, mix it in post to whatever polar pattern / width combo you find most pleaseing).

Personally, hard to beat #1.  total 3D

#2 sounds really nice too, less chatty.

Yes! the mic will overload without it

yes.
the mic will clip.

if you see a red light come on (and stay on) on the control unit, you're fucked.

just run the pad, and you'll be golden.  the mic is *very* sensitive, and it will clip w/o the pad engaged. 
get a pair of C batteries for it, phantom power it from the box (dont ask me why, i just like it that way).
dont pad the deck. 
the signal will be a HOT mic signal, or a WEAK line level.  its sort of a matter of which one you want to deal with.  cranking open the attenuation w/the line level (what i'd do), or using a lot (likely) on the mic input.
I'd go line in, run the Marantz around 8.  the pad shouldn't be needed there.
