Recording bands practice sessions
« on: October 07, 2007, 07:21:52 AM »
Hey all... I recently had a a band ask me to record some of their practice sessions.

Their typical setup while practicing is they set all set up around the perimeter of a mid size room so they can see each other leaving a hole in the middle.  I'm thinking my best setup is putting omnis in the center, however, someone suggested trying bleumin in the center.

What do you think?

Stay Kind,
Dana

it depends, how does it sound in that 'hole' in the middle? if it sounds good in there, run blumlein, that should be your best bet since youd be picking up 360* around them all. If it sounds like poop in there, just make them setup their small PA system and setup DINa/ORTF in front of the stacks :)

I have yet to do it... So it might be a trial and error type of thing.  But there is no small sound system.  The bands practice setup is pretty much all acoustic.  Mics set up in the middle would be probably around 5' from all the instruments.

so your only option would be monitors then? If they are all acoustic at their practice sessions, then I would def aim for Blumein in the very middle of that 'hole' :)

So I noticed you have the ck69 shotguns :) Im JEALOUS bud ;D BTW, are those 2 section right? do you have to run both sections or can you run just one ??? I would LOVE to have a pair of them for the really shitty sounding/rowdy/chatty venues here in da burgh :) Theyre just SOOO damn expensive. I saw a pair FS awhile back for 700/pair, which isnt bad at all compared to new, but too rich for my blood at the moment for sure :)

I vote for omnis 180 degrees 7-12 inch spread for group in a circle
or
baffled if it's a half circle

Might have them tighten up the circle if they sing unamplified.

If nothing works and the band hears the first recording that way they may be willing to move a bit.  Just a thought.  YMMV

I think that was me who recommended that :) I'd definitely get the band to setup in a circle if possible and then run omnis Healy Method in the center of everyone.

+t to Nick. It was a good suggestion. The recording was a hit and I came away with a simple little extension for my mic bar that he suggested that allows you to get the 7" spacing between caps.

I'll use it again this weekend to tape a rehersal.

Yep.. I've got the 69s.  Got them new from Boxy so it took forever but the discount made it worth the wait.  Apparently AKG only makes them to order at this point so unless anyplace has them in stock it will be a wait.  Too bad the wait was long enough to make me miss the shows I wanted to use them for.  They do come in two parts.  You can use the short config or the long one that has both pieces together.  I don't think you can use the long config portion on it's own.  Have not got to really get out with them yet but broke them in with a CK61 in the middle.  Sounded good. (And they come with a really cool leather quiver to protect them.)

Just got back from a kick ass Lotus show tonight.  Talked to a few of the band members.  Practice tomorrow is canceled since 1/2 of them are heading out to RAQ. (I was going to cut it tight and hit up both.)

Yes, that Lotus show was indeed kick-ass.  So was the RAQ show.  Just to let you know, if you ever wanna borrow my 460 bodies so you can run 4 channels for this band's practice, you know you are more than welcome to them.
