New taper looking for mics

Hello, i'm new with this about recording shows.. i actually have a Sony Hi-MD MZ-RH10, and i was thinking in start to tape some local bands that i like.. but i dont have a mic.. and also i dont have too much money for get a good one.. so looking at ebay i found some very cheap but i wondering if this mics will work and if i could maybe get some descent recordings, for example i found this one:

and a lot more of Sony ECM-DS70P mics very cheap.. i dont have the enought money for get a Church mic for example (from where i read good comments)

So, please can you help me to decide to get that one?

i think they are pretty good starter mics/battery box combo until you can afford something else down the road (when you become addicted to taping of course  ).

Hi, thanks for answer... i'm afraid that at this time i dont have enough money for that one and i just got a ticket for the Bjork gig here in Peru for first time she will come here!!! the thing is that i spent some money in that ticket so im a bit short for get the mic... mmm i just want to know if that cheap sony ECM-DS70P mic will be enough or will be a waste of money...

I have made better recordings with a set of earbud headphones than that Sony mic.  Seriously, plug the earbuds into the mic input of your HiMD and you will pull a listenable recording.

I never trust any ebay auction out of China. I would look for an ECM-717 or ECM-719 used. Or, if you there's not likely to be lots of crowd chatter, look for a set of omni lapel mics... The closer to 20Hz-20kHz range the better. Good luck!

Most any speaker can be used for a microphone.  A speaker is a very similar concept compared to a microphone, it just works in reverse.  I large speaker only does a good job of capturing low freqencies.  Yamaha actually sells a speaker that is intended to be used as a kick drum mic!  The small earbuds will pickup a wider frequency range than you would think.  I wouldn't use an expensive set of earbuds though, as I have no idea if the plug-in-power does any damage to the headphones...

You can get the old Realistic Stereo Mics - (Im sure Im not the only one who started with one of those!)

I started with those and soon realized that they were limited(in fact the only good show i got from them was Jewel-acoustic) so now 6-8 mics later i have some good stuff, which i should have just bought the first time, i was trying to do "this" cheap as possible but that wasn't very satisfying at all, as soon as a shelled out a few extra bucks and got some good listenable recordings i was satisfied. So strap in for the ride because as soon as you get the fever you will be scouring the yard sale in no time.
