No taping at Penn State Ratdog so which stealth mics?
« on: October 27, 2007, 04:01:56 PM »
Hi fellow taperssectioners;

The admin at Penn State for some reason is not allowing taping at the Ratdog PSU show.  I asked Ruby of GDTSTOO about a few days ago if they got info if the school would change there mind.  She said most likely not.

So Ratdog will allow taping I would think but the school admin won't.  What would be a good stealth mic to use for this, that has it's own power source that I could just plug into my Nomad Jukebox 3 mic input or I may take my old Sony D8 DAT and plug it into that.  Also what would you suggest is better to use the JB3 or the D8.

Right now I'm looking at some of the cheap single point Sony stereo mics on minidisco.com.  I only ever plan on using these when a band that allows taping is told oh no you can't allow taping.  That's why I'm not wanting to spend a whole lot of cash for them.

I would put this thing on top of my baseball style hat somehow.  Is this mic any good?
SONY ECM-DS70P CONDENSER T MIC STEREO MICROPHONE and how about this one too
SONY ECM-MS907 DIGITAL STEREO MICROPHONE MD DAT MIC .  Also and other suggestions would be great.

The concert is on 11/4/07 so I would have to buy these soon I quess.  I kind of am confused and just some advanced help.  The other idea I have but don't quite know how to do is buy an adapter for my Nak 100's.  I have heard and seen an adapter that can use just the caps, I think.  Is that true.  What about the battery?  Would I have a 3 foot long cable (stereo) and then attach the whole mic onto each side of my hat?   Not the shotguns of course because I'd look like a weirder creature than I already do.

Thanks for any and all help.

Joeski
Thanks all

You can probably just hand hold the naks if it's the normal college kid security squad and you are seated away from the aisle.  Drape a shear black cloth over them if you are worried about being seen.

you could always do the 'franken-nak' mod and stealth it that way.....

I went to PSU and taped many shows - what venue is this being held in?

good luck (and mod those naks)

edit: let me see if I can find a link to the thread....

edit2: I think this should be able to get you going....

if you really want to go the low-profile/single point route many people have had much success with the sony ecm-717 and/or ecm-719.  they are basically the same mic, just a newer model.  mine runs fine off of plug in power on my r-09 and md.

d8 vs. jb3 is a push, you have to transfer the dat, but you may run into weird interference issues w/ the jb3, which i've never seen w/ a d8.

just my $.02
Current Foolishness-
AT853c > 3-wire BB > LS10
AT853c > Tinybox > R-09

Other gear in my bag-
SP-CMC-1 (AT 829), ECM-717, Sharp MD-MS702
2x Teac ME-50 (C), AT ATR6250, SP-SPSB-2

Team TEXAS, Naiant, Jazz, Vinyl, moe.

If you have any Brave Combo that needs transferred/uploaded, etc... PM me.

I'm with LKJ. Don't over think this or over complicate it.

Stash your gear on your body or between some friends and get your rig in and you'll be fine.

I've stealthed the Eisenhower before.  Can't walk in with a bag of gear, but the body pat-down is minimal.  Once you're in, you're fine so long as you keep it very low profile.  Hand held should be find if you're not on the aisle.
