Reducing bass in recording with audicity?
« on: November 16, 2007, 03:09:42 PM »
I never post mix my recordings. If they come out bad that's usually it.

But I need to reduce some bass in a recording that's important to a band.

I'm lost should I EQ it? Use the high pass filter? I'm using audicity. Any help is appreciated.

It really depends on the room/room sound and your personal tastes.  When I set a hpf, I usually start only rolling off the lowest of the low end (~ @ 40-50 hz) and move up the frequency band until it sounds 'better'/'good enough' to me.  I usually end up with the hpf @ ~ 60hz, but that is very dependent on my rig and the rooms in which I typically record.

Audacity's HPF function doesn't allow the user to specify the slope, only the starting frequency.  More on frequency and slope here.  You may or may not care, depending on how it sounds to your ears.

If you want control of both starting frequency and slope, try Audacity's EQ feature.  More info here.

Thanks everyone. T's around.

Played around with the HHP & didn't like what I heard. so far the EQ feature is the way to go. Almost there.

I should have added to my earlier post that I generally apply an hpf using a ParaEQ plug-in with AudioDesk as my DAW software.  The signal processing that comes with audacity is only so-so; good enough for freeware but kind of like trying to serve spaghetti with a spoon.

Very true, it's extremely clumsly to do signal processing in Audacity, but maybe that's what you get with a freeware program.  I rarely apply any effects in post production so I almost never have to deal with it.
