Topic: data DVD wav files NooB ??

I have been trying to burn wav files created in EAC to dvd-r blanks to archive, as data dvd's.

I'd like to stay with wav files, as I should be able to copy them back to hard drive and then burn as music discs....at least to my thinking....but, doesn't seem to work.

I have also had problems encoding flac files, so, if possible, I'd like to stay with the wav's. When I get done with a data dvd with like 6 cd's worth of wavs. I get a good data checkin Nero,  but then when I try out the dvd by copying the files back to another hard drive, it hangs up and gives up after a while.

I did get one error message that says "cannot copy track 01. Invalid MS-DOS function."

Sure hope someone can help.

I had a similar problem with some .wav files I archived to DVD. I don't remember the error message, however I was unable to copy the files back to my PC (Windows XP) or my Mac at work (OS10).

I was finally able to recover the files using an old PC at work running Windows 2000. Using a 4GB SD card as a transfer medium they're now all on my new external drive. I've never had problems recovering from CD, but I no longer trust data DVD as an archive option.

You don't copy a wav file you extract it.

incorrect.  if it's burned as a data DVD (or CD), then you just copy it, as you would with any other file.
you only need to "extract" data from an audio CD, and its pretty clear that the original poster is dealing with data DVD's.

So, thanks for the input so far. Could it be cheap media that's screwing me up here? TDK's at $8 for 50!!

The dos console command "FC"  (ie. file compare) can help verify the disc.

usage:
fc C:\file001.wav D:\file001.wav

Importantly, it reads the source file and the destination file and does a byte for byte comparison.
If you can read the entire file on the DVD, it should finish with no reported errors.
 
If you do continue to get errors, try burning at a lower data rate.

When faster CD burners came out, I seem to recall reading that with CD's it helped to reduce errors if the CD was burned at a lower data rate like 2x or 4x. The same rules may apply to DVD's.

hmmm, I just bought some TDK DVD+R discs this weekend...havent used any yet though.
