Those are omni though...right guys?

Maybe a cardioid/hyper-card option would be better to minimize crowd, like the new Sennheisers, Schoeps collette mics, or Neumann km100/lc3/ak__?

Technically they are omnis, but with all the recordings we've made so far they seem much more subcard-like.  Surprisingly directional from my experience so far...

I'll take these any day of the week over the DPA4061's.  If we're including active setups, then obviously there are a lot more possibilities.  I was just considering "stealth mics" to be smaller than typical SDC size in this case.

Agreed!  I have only liked DPA4061 recordings in 'ideal' contexts and have been generally unimpressed with 4061 stealth recordings unless they were really well done in the impact zone.

I think John Dewey (hammerhorror) has a sample posted somewhere as well.  My pair is out on permanent loan/sale locally and so far the results have been quite stellar.  I'll see if I can grab a couple more samples from Tom and post them in the Underappreciated European Mics thread...

Just curious, what makes you prefer these over the DPA4061's?

is it harder to stealth with the full sized XLR end of the Nevaton though? Looking at it compared to 406x mics that seems like a big difference. The Nevaton more closely resembles a CCM or 402x than than a 406x to me... but I haven't seen one up close, just in pics.

What do you guys think?

OK, anyone out there have a lead on the Nevatons?  Those are the best I've heard so far!!!

I'll chip in that I like the Sennheiser MKE2 over the DPA 4060 as well.  There is something irritating/grating about the DPA.  All the frequencies are there, and amazing detail, but something actually wears down my ears.  I have noticed it most on things like guitar amplifiers.  Check out my Nathan Coles sample at Soundmann.com.  The vocal (through the PA) sounds fine, but the guitar actually hurts my ears after a longer listen.  Can anyone explain this???  By the way, it is not merely "transparent".  I mean, the guitar did not sound like that, it was not irritating *in the room*.  It seems to be doing something bad to the sound, lol.

OK, here are some ideas.  Unproven, but ideas nonetheless.  The Sennheisers are gold plated mylar diaphragms.  Excellent detail and tonal balance.  Basically the same material as most high end stuff (Neumann, Beyerdynamic, etc).  The DPA are actually gold too, but the diaphragm is untensioned, a rectangular sheet just lying on the backplate.  AFAIK the Nevatons are actually metal diaphragms.  Very thin metal, either stainless steel or nickel.  I think the construction accounts for the sound, in some way.

Not really unhappy with the AT853's and like you've mentioned I've also made some nice recordings with them, it's just the little gear slut voice in my head that keeps saying to me, "what could you get that would be better than these?" I expect to have some extra cash after the new year and I'm just looking for new stuff to add to the bag.

Tim, the nevatons are tiny, like the dpa's.  Maybe a tad bigger than 4060's but still tiny, smaller than 853's.  Saw them last night again up close and personal    The xlr adapter is on the end because it can take a full 48v.  If you have a smallish pre (mp-2, aerco, psp-2, sax) this isn't a problem for the jedi's.  Small pre vs. batt box is not a huge size increase if the recorder is small (mt, iriver).
