AKG 480's - when to use cards or hypercards
« on: January 13, 2008, 08:41:11 PM »
I inherited some AKG480's and have only run them a few times.  It seems like the feedback I've gotten on when to run the ck61's and when to run the ck63's has varied.  Is there a consensus on which to use when I'm 25-30 from the stage, and which should I use when I'm about twice that distance?  The venue I mainly record at is an indoor theater with very high ceilings if that makes a difference.

Your mileage here will vary depending on the taper but I like to use hypers when the room (small bars) is boomy(the sound bounces of the walls) and chatty and cards when I tape at a nice sounding theater and I am high above the crowd. I like to run cards out side and I think I have never run my hypers but I could be wrong.

i have found cards to be the most preferred in the majority of taping situations.  the hypers do good when you are pretty far away or in a boomy/bassy place as has been said.

I always use hypers inside; always use cards or omni's on stage and outdoors

For the Aggie/fox/fillmore/Cervantes/bluebird/ect….. I think your best bet is to run the hypers unless you are way up front, have the stand up a good bit, and have a quite crowd. I run my hypers 99% of the time indoors. The last time I ran the cards indoors was for The Slip at the fox. I was at the front drink rail and there were maybe 50 people in the show. I run the cards 90% of the time outdoors unless Im really far back or I think people around me are going to be loud.

I realize you have the 48x and I have the 39x, but the pattern choices are the same.
