Zoom H2 or Edirol R-09 for me?
« on: January 16, 2008, 09:01:25 AM »
I intend to get a new recorder sometime in the next couple months and don't know which would be better for my purposes.

Most of the time I'll be recording a soundboard feed with the recorder.  Occasionally I'll use it for video projects by hooking a lavalier/SP preamp combo to the speaker.  I likely will not use it with any other external mics besides the single lavalier.

So which one would suit my purposes better?  I like the Zoom because it's less expensive, which is always a plus, but the R-09 has a great reputation.

The H2 has an over-sensitive line input.  That's not a problem if the level sent to it can be reduced at source.  Its mic input is noisy (compared with its built in mics which seem remarkably quiet for the price).  Those are the downsides as I see it - otherwise it's a remarkable little recorder for the money.  Read http://www.2090.org/zoom/bbs/viewtopic.php?t=9745&start=0 for all the stuff the manual doesn't tell you.
