Taping tips for concert recording with ST-9100 and STC-11 mics

Hi guys,

My mics (omni mics in Croakie mount) just died during a show. Decided to order some Church Audio cardioid mics and 9100 preamp as replacement/upgrade. I ordered the mics with the Croakie mount. I'll be using them with my Iriver H120.

I've never done any concert recording with cardioid mics. When I've got them on my glasses (with the Croakie mount) do I want to push the mics to the front, in front of my head, or do I want to keep them near my ears, as I did with omnis for binaural recording?

When I have a chance to mount them on a t-bar (e.g., when recording my band), what mic placement do you recommend?

Finally, any tips on using this pre with the Iriver?

Get them as far forward as you can and pointing at the source of sound.

Keep in mind that the cards will not be quite as forgiving as the omni's, as far as 'phasing' issues go. You'll want to face the sound source and keep as still as possible. On the plus side, they can be more forgiving of crowd noise.

As far as placement on a t-bar, experiment and see what sounds best to you in different situations.

On using the ST-9100 with the iHP-120:

If you like to use the like to use the iHp's safety clip, which I think is a great feature, start with the ST-9100 at 11:00 (unity gain) and the iHP's gain at 10 (to give it some headroom for the safety clip to work). If you find that you need more gain, increase the gain on the ST-9100. If you need more than the 20 DB that the ST-9100 provides, you can turn up the  gain further on the iHP-120, but I'm sure that wouldn't be necessary when recording a band.

If you don't want to use safety clip, start with the ST-9100 at 11:00 and the iHP-120 at 0. Get the first 20 DB of gain you need by turning up the gain on the ST-9100 and if you need more, increase the gain on the iHP-120.

Cardiods...point them directly at the stacks (speakers) if you are mounting to a hat.. keep in mind..any movement side to side will cause you some phasing, you are going to be absolutely totally still. If you dont think you can do that..mount them to your collar, that way you will be free to move your head around.
