Need VERY small umbrella - I'm thinking 6"
« on: January 30, 2008, 12:48:23 AM »
Hello!

I'm putting together a super-compact rig for overseas recording situations. We're talking Africa, Asia, South America, etc. It'll be SP-CMC-4s, Gorillapod tripod, R09 and PS2 in an Otterbox.

I'm looking for an umbrella for wet situations, but I really need a super tiny umbrella, something bigger than a parasol, but smaller than a standard umbrella. Six inches really is what I have in mind.

Is there anywhere to find such a thing?

I remember as a kid my mom had a umbrella hat that folded up small and you might be able to use a clamp. Not sure where you could buy one but I think some one brought it back from singapore for her. I ran google and found some places if your interested.

I would not use an umbrella at all to protect microphones as it will act like a drum and you will hear the rain beating down on it - it will sound horrible.

Instead look at the Rycote Duck - it protects the mic. from rain, but is silent.  The rain lands silently on the cover, goes throufg the foam and drops off silently.

Looks daft -- but works very well.

Isn't the trick to that, putting a towel over the umbrella and fastening with clothes-pins at the edges? That way, it will soften the pitter-patter effect of rain hitting the umbrella.

As far as umbrellas go, I remember seeing a small setup that fits on a set of golf clubs to keep them dry.  Saw it at Dick's Sporting Goods.  Can probably find them at any golf store.

I usually can find really small umbrellas (8-12 inches) at my local dollar store. Hope that helps.

Peace,
-Dave.

I use the golf umbrella.  I bought one off of ebay and chopped the hanlde off.  I mount it to the mic stand with the windtech mic clamp.  Just remove the 5/8" threaded bolt and stick the umbrella on there...  It is great for festivals, keeps the sun from belting your mics and keeps a scattered shower at bay.  The finger cots/condoms work amazingly well for strong rain though...  Just make sure the rubber is tight across the front of the capsule...

$135 finally a product from Rycote with a price that didn't make my eyes water...although...you are right, the image is hurting my eyes :)

Clipping some sort of nice wobbly-case foam (black) over a black umbrella would indeed do the same trick...and look sexy. You can even get some black dog-clips to run around the edge of the umbrella.

+T to everyone, thanks!  :D

I'll definitely follow up on a couple of these options. I'll keep the finger cot idea in mind, though I've always shied away from the rubber idea - always feared that would muffle the sound to much, but I'll grab a bunch from work and see what happens. Definitely digging the golf umbrella, didn't even think of that.

Thanks again!

I bought a small umbrella at 99cent only store in california. It is a smallish umbrella and I am able to clamp it to my stand and it provides good protection. It is not much bigger than the one on the dummy head above. Price was right!
