Topic: reliable windscreens on a budget???

so, with all the recent talk and excitement about festival season approaching, Im thinking its time to get myself some real windscreens for my Audio Technica 4041's. Can anyone suggest something. They came with windscreens, and theyve worked well, but ive never really dealt with any serious weather or wind. Can anyone point my in the direction, or make some suggestions as to what i should be looking for. As usual, I am on a tight budget...

please explain "dead rats" Ive heard the terminology, but havent researched this topic until now....

Dead rats are furry things that are often grey and thus look like a dead rat...you see them on the end of poles that reporters shove in the face of people when then can't get close enough to be obnoxious at arms length, so they have to be obnoxious at 10 foot pole length.

There are some folks around here that make dead rats out of feux fur they buy from the fabric store...I've heard of designer colors such as purple, brown, and even grover colored green.

Obviously the fur helps significantly in cutting down wind noise and putting the fur over the top of your stock windscreens is a typical solution for gusty conditions.

I just got a set of Shure A81WS units to use with the Schoeps from Full Compass, along with a bunch of A53Ms. We're going to take them out for a test tomorrow.

For real the olsen link is great...  These would be individual small dead rats that fit over a standard foam ball... No wind noise!

You will see a slight attenuation of highs very slight but no wind at all

Since you're on a budget, the most budget consciense wind screens are home made.  I've done this before and they worked great.

Just go to your JoAnne Fabric store and buy some furniture foam...or craft foam...whatever you wanna call it.  The stuff I got was about 4 inches thick.  Then wait until the wife is outta the house and use your electric carving knife to whittle a pair of screens out of the foam. 

For the hole, I just kinda plucked away at the center with an exacto knife.  The resulting hole wasn't a perfect circle, but it doesn't need to be.  Yeah, these were homely as can be, but Stevie Ray Vaughan didn't seem to mind playing a flea bitten homely guitar, so what the hell?

Before someone chimes in with doubts about the foam being too dense or not dense enough, it ain't an issue...these work just fine.

If looks is an issue for you, just throw some homemade dead rats over them and you never know either the rats or the screens are homemade.
