Mac TiBook memory help? I need to replace half the ram
« on: February 10, 2008, 12:11:05 PM »
So I guess half my ram died. My TiBook got a little slow. I used "rember" to test it and I had a hard time figuring out the results but it would seem only 512 of my gig is working properly. So I want to replace one. I am having trouble figuring out exactly what to get and from where. I of course want to find it at a good price. I have never bought laptop ram before. My system says this:

SODIMM0/J16TOP:

  Size:   512 MB
  Type:   SDRAM
  Speed: PC133U-333

SODIMM1/J16BOTTOM:

  Size:   512 MB
  Type:   SDRAM
  Speed: PC133U-333
ISO: your recordings of The Slip, Surprise Me Mr. Davis and The Barr Brothers. pm me please.

Hi Cleantone,

It would help if you could point out exactly which model you have:
http://support.apple.com/specs/ibook/

Usually Newegg is the place to go for Mac upgrades. If you give them a call they will surely sort you out, no matter what.
Good luck!

Ouch, your so right. I don't even want to think about how deep I am into this laptop after the purchase and upkeep. The good part is that it is pretty damn usable for a 6-7 year old machine.

If you don't mind me picking your brain a little further. What is a good way to verify that one of these cards is dead? The results I got from rember were not really intuitive and I wasn't 100% they meant some was dead. Anything you can offer would be awesome. +t

Also, any idea if this would work?

http://cgi.ebay.com/512MB-144-pin-SDRAM-PC133-Mhz-SO-DIMM-Notebook-Ram_W0QQitemZ130195069837QQihZ003QQcategoryZ99261QQtcZphotoQQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

It "looks" the same and is PC-133 144pin. The listing only mentions PC compatibility. I do not know enough to say one way or another.

What most ppl don't realize is that Apple provide an excellent test disc buncled with each machine they sell!
It's called Apple Hardware Test, and it will check your memory modules for any errors:

Yeah, since the introduction of SDRAM (PC66 and onwards), all memory should be compatible between PC and Mac platforms. I can't give you any guarantees, but the architecture is identical at least. Ebay is your friend... ;-)

Oh yeah! I am looking for the disc that came with this machine. I know I have one for my Mac Mini. I don't suppose that one can be used. Thanks for the help.

Hey this is another place I've bought memory from 3 or 4 times over the last couple years:
http://18004memory.com/

They make it pretty easy to pick out your computer, and then they show you what will work with it.

Each AHT disc is model specific, but there's no harm trying. If it's not compatible, you'll just get an error message.

As an Apple localizer, I was in charge of translating the UI and mastering the AHT discs for the official Swedish versions, so I've spent a good deal of hours with them...

Have you run Tech Tools Pro? Also have you checked to see if its seated properly?
