MD to computer transfer suggestions?
« on: March 02, 2008, 02:35:30 PM »
hello...

i taped a show a few days ago using a sony MD recorder and a stealth mic... ive done this many times and in the past i have attached an analog connection from the player to my PC and played the recording back to transfer it...

this time around i would be interested in a better way of doing this... my MD player has no digital output line and while it has a USB cable, it doesnt allow you to do the MD -> PC transfer

anyone here know a way to get at this recording without going analog?

You will have to use a hi-md deck and transfer it via usb and "sonic stage". Or get someone who has a deck to do it for you.

If it is not a Hi-MD recording it can also be don eon an old MD deck with digital/optical out.  Best: shmooze someone with and RH1.

I could transfer this for you.  I use Sony MD deck--optical--hhb standalone CD recorder.  You'd have to send me the MD, blank CDr and enough stamps for return postage.

I can be reached at  goodwill22 at sbcglobal.net

I was under the impression that only MZ-RH1/MZ-M200 can transfer legacy MDs without hassle. So with any other model, it's not doable. Correct me if I'm wrong!

We did a lot of research about the best options to transfer MDs, and summarized it in this thread:

Depending on your hardware, these are your best options:
1. RH1 > USB > computer (no need to fiddle with settings during transfer, since you're actually not re-recording. You'll work out the levels in post!)
2. MD deck* > optical cable > bit perfect soundcard (24bit if possible) with optical in> computer
*If you have to go the MD deck way, try to get one with the later ATRAC chip (type-R/S). Older ATRAC versions have inferior DSP and can even introduce a threshold on high frequencies.

Nameloc, with your gear I don't think that you can transfer legacy MDs, only Hi-MD.
RH1/M200 is the only model that can pull it off:

Well..with my m100 and that version of sonic stage..digi transfers can only be done with something recorded in hi-md ..whether it be on a 1gb disc or a standard md. So i wonder if the rh1s ability comes from the new version of sonic stage and not from the actual deck? And if the new "s.s." software is compatible with other himd decks..like the m100...?

It would be fantastic news if it was true, but the odds aren't that great. If you can verify the theory with an old MD and your m100 or rh910, I'd be really interested!
My guess is that the ability to upload legacy MD to WAV is still hardware based somehow.

BTW, say hi to Lacey  ;D

My last statement meant that i can record something in pcm on a standard md (less time obviously) and can transfer it. Said material has to recorded on a himd...at least mine. An 80 min md only gets like 28 minutes when being used for pcm. My version of "s.s" also only allows 1 digi transfer per disc..after that first transfer it puts an unremovable block on the md preventing any additional digis.

OK. The crunch is which units can digi-transfer concerts taped with legacy ATRAC MD recorders (meaning not Hi-MD)? And whether the later versions of Soundstage enables "legacy digi-transfer" on other units than RH1/M200?

How about trying to find a used desktop/rack MD player, they usually have digital outs. I have a Sony one with optical out. As MD has fallen out of favor maybe people are dumping them? I have transfered all my MD:s to HDD and do not need it anymore (but I am far away...).

Some MD players have optical  out which beats the system: you can xfer your legacy MD.  But you cannot xfer Hi-MD.
