Setup for "lo-fi" vinyl release?
« on: May 27, 2008, 10:53:41 PM »
I'm talking with an artist about putting out a small-run 7" of my recording, just as a vanity project for myself and to put some extra cash in his pocket on the road (I'll pay to press it and I'll work out a generous deal with him on split above recoup).

I'm looking at running my regular rig (KM184>V2>SonyD50) in a living room, rehearsal space, whatever the guy wants, doing as many single takes as he wants 'til he's happy, but no multitracking/overdubs.  The artist normally fronts a heavy-ish band, so this'll be something "soft" with just vocal and either acoustic or electric with a miniscule amp; a one-off of something different than his main output.

I've been leaning toward just running my regular DIN, or possibly ORTF.  Given what we're going for, would you guys split the mic pair up, one on the guitar/amp and one on his voice?  Or just stick with what I'd do for AUD taping in a small room?

You can either spot-mic or stereo array this session.  Try each and see how it sounds.  If you are offerring him all the takes he wants, why not offer yourself the same??    8)

That occurred to me too.  My concern would be that the take he liked the best might not be the better sounding config.  So I will try both ways and get him to warm up a bit, but I'm afraid of burning out his attention span  ::) ;D in the short amount of time we'll have (basically an afternoon) and just wanted to see if people feel very strongly about one way or the other.

One time I did something like this (using KM184s BTW) I mounted one mic pointed for vocals and one mic clamped 14" below pointing to the sound hole of the guitar.  There was enough bleed over between the two channels that I got a really very good stereo effect.  I was surprised how good it sounded for how simple it was.

The other time I ran ORTF a few feet from the guitarist but there was some reinforcement way out to the sides of the room.  If I could do it again, I'd do what I did the first time. ymmv

Cool, thanks.  Any more comments welcome for sure.

Be careful in post to roll-off the low end (below 90 hz) or compress it to the average level of your recording.  Mastering for Vinyl is something of a compromise.

I believe I ended up starting the rolloff at 80hz, but I think it should be good, it was just an acoustic 12-string after all.  Waiting impatiently for the test pressings now  ;D
